    TELL CITY - Patrolman John Allen said he was "surprised but honored" last week to be nominated by America's Most Wanted, the long-running crime-fighting TV program, as one of its All Stars.

  • Farewell to the Chief

    Tell City Police Chief David Faulkenberg receives a standing ovation during Monday's meeting of the city's board of public works and safety after formally announcing his plans to retire at the end of the month. Faulkenberg served 31 years with the city's police force and has been chief for the past decade. Behind him are Sewage Department Superintendent Bruce Badger; mayoral assistant Hazel Davis, Fire Chief and city patrolman Greg Linne and City Councilman Tony Hollinden. Law enforcement has been "my life's calling," Faulkenberg said during a few minutes of reminiscing about his job.

  • Officials postpone orientation for PC eighth-graders

    LEOPOLD - Perry Central's eighth-grade orientation program will be postponed until Thursday, Feb. 28.

    The program is for all eighth-grade students at Perry Central and their parents.

    The free chili supper will start at 6 p.m. with the program at 6:30.

  • Despite their name, barrens communities support diverse ecosystems

    TELL CITY - Barrens are globally rare natural communities that often contain spectacular displays of wildflowers and grasses more often seen in prairie settings. Ecologists characterize barrens by their poor, shallow or excessively drained soils, often occurring over bedrock or other substrates that experience drought conditions during at least part of the year.

  • Mu Gamma's sesquicentennial cookbooks available

    TELL CITY - Copies of a new cookbook published in conjunction with Tell City's sesquicentennial are hot off the press and available for purchase at several locations.

    The 360-page books sell for $10 each.

    Mu Gamma Sorority worked for several months gathering recipes. Once they were edited and organized, recipes were submitted to Debby Mills-Phillips of Lamar, who compiled and published the book.

    "We're very pleased with them and Mu Gamma thanks everyone who helped us by submitting recipes," sorority member and cookbook chairwoman Susan Harpenau said.

  • Historical society accepting orders for new history book

    256-pages cover sports, churches, business

    TELL CITY - A new pictorial history of Tell City being published to mark the community's 150th anniversary in 2008 will be available in July. However, the 256-page book's sponsor, the Tell City Historical Society, is taking prepublication orders through May 1.

    Layout of photos is complete and captions are currently undergoing editing, according to a news release issued last week by the historical society.

  • Court denies lower bail for King

    Child-molesting suspect remains in county jail

    TELL CITY - County Magistrate Karen Werner turned down Friday a bail-reduction request sought by a Tell City man charged with three counts of child molesting.

    Jason King, 1148 Ninth St., petitioned the court to reduce his $60,000 cash-only bail. King was arrested after he turned himself in at the Perry County Family and Social Services Administration Office last month.

    Police launched a criminal investigation after a girl's mother accused King of inappropriately touching the child.

  • TV conversion shouldn't cost Perry County residents much

    Scammers may take advantage of chance to make a buck

    PERRY COUNTY - A Leopold woman called The News Friday, hoping to alert county residents to people she said were going around the county claiming regular television antennas and some satellite dishes won't work when the nation converts to digital TV in a year.

    A conversion from analog television signals has been in the works for some time, but has been featured in national media reports as the one-year-to-go mark passed this week.
