  • Pride in Tell City

    Tell City flags fly proudly from Jim Meek's pickup truck last week. A co-chairman of the Tell City Sesquicentennial Committee, Meek and other planners of this summer's celebration are hoping to see more people flying Tell City flags available for sale. The small flags are priced at $15 each, which includes a bracket for flying them from vehicle windows. Larger 2-foot-by-3-foot flags are priced at $25.

  • Tell City leaders meeting at senior center today

    TELL CITY - The Tell City Common Council and Board of Public Works and Safety will hold their meetings today at the William Tell Senior Citizens Center, 1301 11th St.

    Mayor Barbara Ewing has said city leaders will occasionally meet outside of the council chambers.

    The works board meets at 6 p.m., with the council meeting following at 7. Both meetings are open to the public.

  • More money available for home repair

    Another $140,000 approved

    PERRY COUNTY - Perry County is getting an additional $140,000 in home-repair grant funding, Tony Pappano announced Thursday, saying again while he appreciates the money, it's another "drop in the bucket."

    He expected to notify the county commissioners at their regular meeting beginning at 6:30 p.m. today in the county courthouse.

  • Turkey-hunting challenge coming to Perry County

    Teams from across the nation converging here April 23-25

    PERRY COUNTY - Teams of turkey hunters from across the county are training their sights on Perry County as a nationally televised outdoors program prepares to make a three-day visit next month.

    The Campbell Outdoor Challenge, seen by millions of people each week on the Outdoor Channel, showcases the growing sport of videotaping hunts. Teams of hunters spend three days hunting game and are scored on success in bagging game and the quality of their videos and interviewing skills.

  • Deputy: Shred your documents

    TROY - Someone got into several Troy residents' trash overnight, Sheriff's Deputy Daymion Marsh said Wednesday morning, "and I want people to know what's going on" because identity theft could have been their motive.

    He'd heard rumors a homeless person may be living in the area, and may have been responsible, he said. As a precaution, however, people should shred any documents that contain personal information before discarding them, he urged.

  • RCD hopes to beautify gateway with wildflowers

    PERRY COUNTY - Lincoln Hills Resource Conservation Development Area members are looking to beautify an important gateway to the county with wildflowers and could add other areas to a roadside wildflower project taking shape for 2008.

    Meeting Tuesday evening in Leopold, the RC&D council discussed establishing wildflower plots near St. Croix, close to the intersection of Interstate 64 and Indiana 37. The area would be seeded with a variety of wildflowers and prairie grasses that would add color to the interchange.

  • Musicians earn state medals

    Director: Performers demonstrate independence

    INDIANAPOLIS - Of the eight Tell City High School entries in state-level solo-and-ensemble competition Saturday, five earned gold medals, according to their director. Of the three that earned silver medals, two were only a half point shy of gold ratings and one was only a point away.

    Earning gold medals were soloists Nick Hawkins, snare drum; Benji Koelling, drum set; Amber Mueller, trombone; Jessica Niswonger, alto saxophone and Sarah Roccia, clarinet.
