  • BREAKING NEWS - Substance-abuse workshops canceled

    TELL CITY - Substance-abuse workshops scheduled for Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Tell City have been canceled.

    Presenter Dr. George Ross had to cancel due to a family emergency, according to Paul Alvey, who had been coordinating the workshops for local groups and parents. He said Ross plans to reschedule his visit in the near future.

  • Political forum Tuesday

    PERRY COUNTY - The Perry County News and the Perry County Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a political forum Tuesday to give the community an opportunity to assess candidates vying in this year's primary election.

    The forum will begin at 6 p.m. at the Schergens Center. Candidates for the county offices of commissioner, council, recorder and surveyor have been invited, as have candidates for Perry Central and Cannelton school boards.

    The forum is open to the public and will be aired live on radio station WLME 102.7 FM.

  • Sodrel to speak at Lincoln Day Dinner

    TELL CITY - The Perry County Republican Party Lincoln Day Dinner is set for Thursday at Bill & Dave's Smokin' Pit.

    Cost is $14 with social hour at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m.

  • Auditions set for Schweizer Fest musical

    TELL CITY - Auditions for the 2008 Schweizer Fest stage production of 1776 are coming up soon and the show's director wants to extend an invitation to everyone who is interested.

    The musical's 25 male roles and two female roles are open to residents of Perry, Spencer and Hancock counties who are 18 years and older. Past Schweizer Fest musicals have tapped talent in all three counties.

  • $200,000 in federal highway funding goes to Huffman Mill Bridge repairs

    PERRY COUNTY - A little history will get a lot of help thanks to a $240,000 grant from the Federal Highway Administration.

    The Huffman Mill Covered Bridge, which spans the Anderson River between Perry and Spencer counties was awarded the grant as part of the National Historic Covered Bride Preservation Program. The bridge, which was built in 1864 by William T. Washer, was named Huffman Mill because of the close proximity of the mill built by George Huffman.

  • County school systems achieve AYP designation

    Improvements needed in special education

    PERRY COUNTY - Tell City's three public schools failed, individually, to achieve "adequate yearly progress" under the federal No Child Left Behind Act, but their parent school corporation, like the two others in Perry County, were designated as attaining the status in 2007, according to reports from the Indiana Department of Education.

  • MicroVote fined after machines decertified

    Attorney places blame on Congress

    PERRY COUNTY - Results of a January 2006 special election in Cannelton remain valid even though the electronic voting machines on which citizens recorded their preferences were decertified at the time.

    Cannelton voters went to the polls then to determine if their city's school board should be converted from an appointed to an elected body. The election was the first to occur after county commissioners approved in September 2004 the purchase of electronic machines to replace punch-card systems.

  • UPDATE - Escaped inmates believed to be in Madisonville, Ky., area

    BRANCHVILLE - Indiana State Police believe two men who escaped from the Branchville Correctional Facility Friday night are in the Madisonville, Ky., area.

    Conan Helsley, 20, and Kent Day, 45, are believed to have stolen a pickup truck from the J.H. Rudolph Co. asphalt plant just north of Interstate 64.

  • Fire drives three from Tell City home

    TELL CITY - A woman was rescued from a burning home Thursday morning, and she and a police officer were seen at Perry County Memorial Hospital afterward, according to the chief of the Tell City Volunteer Fire Department.

    Greg Linne said his department was dispatched at approximately 2:08 a.m. and arrived at 1034 12th St. within five minutes.

  • Spring has Sprung

    Training wheels offered Abby Clark, 4, a little extra balance and security Monday evening in the 900 block of Main Street. The bicycle was a Christmas gift, said her dad, Joshua, who offered encouragement and a guiding hand. Warmer weather this week offered a prime opportunity for Abby and others to dust off their bicycles and enjoy spring.
