  • Works-board meeting canceled

    CANNELTON – The Cannelton Board of Public Works and Safety meeting scheduled for Monday has been canceled, according to the city’s clerk-treasurer, Arvina Bozarth.

    The common-council meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. that day will be conducted.

  • Forest Service plans autumn burns in three areas

    PERRY COUNTY – Prescribed burns in three local areas of the Hoosier National Forest are planned this fall, officials from the U.S. Forest Service announced this week. A public meeting next week will share details.

    The meeting will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 13 in the Perry Central High School Library. The public is invited to the meeting to learn about the prescribed burn program in the forest, including the areas proposed for fall burning.

    PERRY COUNTY – After a sun-kissed weekend at Celina Lake and Rome, the Hoosier Heritage Fall tour visits Cannelton Saturday for that city’s Heritage Fest. Sunday’s events will be in Bristow as the town welcomes thousands of people for a car show and entertainment.

    Hours in Cannelton are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, with events on Washington Street.

    LEOPOLD – Both of Perry County’s high-school marching bands earned gold ratings at Indiana State School Music Association district competition at Jasper Saturday, permitting them to take their shows to the regional level.

    CANNELTON – “It was quite obvious that they had decided beforehand that they would not address any of our concerns, and they would not speak,” former custodian Betsy Riley said about a Sept. 28 executive session with Cannelton School Board members.

  • New unemployment rules go into effect

    INDIANAPOLIS – Hoosiers receiving unemployment insurance will notice changes to eligibility requirements beginning this month.

    These new rules are part of a law passed by the General Assembly making several changes to unemployment insurance over the next year.

    “This is a part of an overall push to make the system fair for employers and the unemployed alike,” said Mark W. Everson, commissioner of the Department of Workforce Development. “These provisions continue our efforts to close eligibility loopholes.”

  • Foundation seeks nominees

    PERRY COUNTY – The Perry County Community Foundation is accepting nominations for the 2011 Evelyn R. Adams Lifetime Philanthropist Award.

    The award will be presented to the recipient at the December grant award ceremony. You can submit your nominations online at www.perrycommunityfoundation.org/lifetime-philanthropist-award or by mail to PCCF, P.O. Box 13, Tell City, IN 47586.

    Nominations must include information on some of the organizations the nominee has helped with and his or her leadership roles in the community.

  • County gets ‘storm-ready’ designation

    TELL CITY – A brief ceremony is scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday to mark the designation of Perry County as storm-ready, according to an announcement from the National Weather Service office in Louisville, Ky.

    According to information posted at www.stormready.noaa.gov, the county became one of 1,805 storm-ready sites in 48 states, Puerto Rico and Guam Sept. 23. Among them are 899 counties and varying numbers of government, commercial, military and other types of sites.
