  • Walk for Health program Saturday at Perry Central

    LEOPOLD - A Walk for Health event Saturday at Perry Central Community School will kick off a series of events supporters hope will promote exercise as a key to healthy living.

    Lincoln Hills Resource Conservation and Development Area's education committee, along with the county's Purdue University extension program and YMCA, are hosting four events in Spencer and Perry counties. The Walk For Health events - one walk in the spring and one in the fall of the year in both Spencer and Perry counties - are planned for northern and southern areas of each county. Other events are:

  • Woman rescued from fire 'doing very well'

    TELL CITY - Debbie (McCallister) Howell "is doing very well, considering everything she's been through," according to County Treasurer Martha Wooldridge.

    Howell, who works as a deputy in the treasurer's office, suffered smoke inhalation before being rescued from a burning home at 1034 12th St., Tell City, April 3.

    She called 911 to report the fire and that she was trapped in the basement, and was pulled through one of its windows by firefighters and police officers.

    With new church, Deer Creek Baptist turns new page on congregation's 187 years of history

    A new house of prayer built on an ages-old foundation of faith stirred with joyful hearts Sunday as members of Deer Creek Baptist Church offered thanks to God, one another and their congregation's pioneer founders.

    The Deer Creek congregation is one of the area's oldest, with roots traceable to the earliest days of the county, said Stan Coy of Grandview, a historian who examined the church's records and offered his own retrospective Sunday.

  • Anderson Woods camp season begins June 2

    ADYEVILLE - Anderson Woods Inc. has announced its 31st annual special needs summer camp for people with disabilities beginning June 2 and running weekly for eight weeks.

    Each session begins Monday morning and lasts until the following Thursday afternoon when campers return home.

    The first three sessions are for children with the last five sessions reserved for adult campers.

    Campers experience outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, swimming, gardening and feeding animals. The setting is rural and campers sleep in rustic log-cabin dormitories.

  • Students to display artwork April 19-20

    TELL CITY - Tell City Regional Arts Association will host its second annual student art show for junior-high and senior-high school students at the Schergens Center April 19-20.

    This year will be even bigger and better than last year, organizers said, with the invitation for participation extended to new school systems, as well as the addition of more awards.

    The show will open April 19 from 1 to 9 p.m., with awards and reception beginning at 7 p.m.

  • Library board warms to Tell Street development plans

    TELL CITY - Tell City-Perry County Library board members warmed up to the idea of a professional building and storage-facility complex after a presentation April 2 led by Chris Goffinet and Calvin Cash.

    At last month's meeting, board members raised concerns about a proposed project east of the library. They opposed Progressive Investment Co.'s proposal to build self-storage units, saying they were worried about trash, rodents and detracting from the library's look. However, members felt professional buildings would be fine.

  • PC Storm wins state basketball title

    PERRY COUNTY - Hard work and determination led Perry County Storm basketball members to gold as they won the Special Olympics Indiana State Finals.

    The team took on the Clark County Warriors March 30 after defeating the Kosciusko County Panthers 59-34 the previous day at Indiana State University in Terre Haute.

    Storm members outscored the Warriors 70-29.

    "We were surprised at how all the team members stepped up in the final game and played their hearts out," said Vicky Lutgring, Special Olympics Perry County coordinator.

  • BREAKING NEWS - Substance-abuse workshops canceled

    TELL CITY - Substance-abuse workshops scheduled for Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Tell City have been canceled.

    Presenter Dr. George Ross had to cancel due to a family emergency, according to Paul Alvey, who had been coordinating the workshops for local groups and parents. He said Ross plans to reschedule his visit in the near future.
