  • Freedom ends for 2 escapees

    Warrick County deputies, troopers capture Day, Helsley

    NEWBURGH - Two escapees from the Branchville Correctional Facility were captured Tuesday evening after they allegedly crashed a stolen car along Indiana 66 in Warrick County while trying to outrun state police and sheriff's deputies.

    Conan Helsley, 20, and Kent Day, 45, had been on the run since scaling a prison fence the night of April 4. They allegedly stole a truck from J.H. Rudolph & Co.'s asphalt plant near Interstate 64 before fleeing to western Kentucky.

    Dr. Matthew Butler of Butler Family Dentistry in Tell City takes a look at 4-year-old Cameron Rogier's teeth during Tuesday's health fair at Perry Central Community School. A large crowd visited booths for screenings and information on a variety of health and safety topics, including sleep disorders, substance abuse prevention and assisted-living services. Rogier was a bit leery of having his teeth examined but changed his mind after his sister, Mikayala, said there wasn't anything to it.

  • Goble's classroom offers global experience

    CANNELTON - Teaching is a profession sometimes not given the recognition it deserves. Day in and day out teachers guide youth in the classroom, on the field, in clubs and even through community organizations not affiliated with the school.

    Two weeks ago The Perry County News featured its first teacher in its Hometown Hero Award series and now adds another to its ranks. Evelyn Lasley nominated Joan Goble, teacher at Cannelton Elementary School, because "she cares about her students and is in the profession because she cares."

  • Plans bud for 46th Dogwood Tour

    Perry County's weekend Dogwood Tour Saturday and Sunday, April 26-27, announces for a 46th year the arrival of spring. The event also serves as an invitation to savor the white blossoms that dot local forests and often precede the explosion of foliage soon to transform the landscape.

    Here's a rundown of this year's Dogwood Tour events across the county. Events in some locations cover both days while others last only one day.

  • Construction progressing at park

    CANNELTON - "The Eagles Bluff project is well under way," Perry County Recreation Director Dan Adams told the county parks and recreation board April 9 about the construction of a restroom building-visitors center at the park overlooking the Ohio River.

    At the board's last meeting Feb. 27, Adams had mentioned some changes the contractor wanted to make in the project's specifications.

  • Port board considers bids

    Wood-chips 'rescue' draws praise from as far away as New Orleans

    TELL CITY - The Perry County Port Authority board of directors agreed at a meeting Monday to accept low bids for two projects contingent on their meeting specifications.

    The first project, which will entail work at two crossings and track surfacing, netted bids ranging from $76,184 to $112,280.

  • County included in disaster declaration

    WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Secretary of Agriculture issued a presidential disaster declaration Feb. 22 for Kentucky, Indiana and Tennessee based on severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds and flooding Feb. 5-6. As a result of this disaster determination, Indiana counties contiguous to Kentucky, including Perry, Crawford and Harrison, were declared eligible for assistance including Farm Service Agency emergency loans in this area.

    Emergency loans may be made to farmers who:

    Are established family farm operators.

  • Group takes STEPs to increase fitness together

    Encouragement, other rewards increase motivation

    TELL CITY - Customers of a local fitness center are bending together in their war against unwanted weight, and invite other men and women of Perry County to join them.

    Shed Those Extra Pounds classes are free and meet at 6 p.m. Mondays in the basement of Everbody's Fun and Fitness Center, 710 Fulton St., Tell City.

    Libby Bauer and Sharlene Crossley started STEP "because there were no evening meetings for Weight Watchers in Tell City," Bauer said.

    Conan Helsley, 20, and Kent Day, 45, had been on the run since scaling a prison fence the night of April 4. They allegedly stole a pickup truck from J.H. Rudolph & Co.’s asphalt plant near Interstate 64 and fled to western Kentucky, where Day has relatives.
