  • Landowner seeks help in opening roadway

    TELL CITY - Perry County commissioners refused in a regular meeting April 7 to help a farmer who told them access to his land via a county road has been blocked by a neighboring landowner. County officials were unsure if the road belongs to the county. The adjacent landowner said it doesn't.

    Which road the farmer intended to have opened is uncertain.

    Herb Huff of Birdseye sought the commissioners' help in getting barricades removed from Odyssey Road, which runs between Old Indiana 37 and Indiana 62 south and west of St. Croix, according to a map he provided.

  • School funds won't come until summer

    Businesses can't operate without revenues, superintendent notes

    CANNELTON - In giving his financial report during a regular school-board meeting Wednesday, Cannelton Schools Superintendent Al Chapman said property-tax revenue isn't normally provided until May or June each year, but he'd received word it won't arrive until July.

    "I heard we probably won't see it until August," board member Barbara Beard told him. She presided over the meeting in the absence of Board President Christal Moskos, who was out of town, Chapman said.

  • Sunlight Hotel to be demolished

    Owner hopes to replace it with similar building, 'but Louisiana style'

    CANNELTON - The historic Sunlight Hotel in Cannelton will be knocked down beginning Tuesday, and its owner hopes to replace it with something more grand to lure visitors to the city from miles around.

    Cannelton leaders' attitude toward renovation of the Sunlight Hotel seemed to have changed after the mostly-new city administration took over at the beginning of the year, but the man responsible for it expressed Wednesday optimism his project will go forward.

  • Commissioners OK added military-leave benefits for workers

    TELL CITY - County commissioners approved in a regular meeting April 7 changes in the county-employee handbook that will incorporate recent changes to the Family and Medical Leave Act.

    The National Defense Authorization Act for 2008 entitles eligible employees to up to 12 work weeks of unpaid leave for "any qualifying exigency arising out of the fact that a spouse, son, daughter or parent of the employee is on active (military) duty," according to information provided by Auditor Connie Berger.

  • Works board wants say on where city officers can moonlight

    TELL CITY - A resolution adopted last week gives the Tell City Board of Public Works and Safety the power to review second jobs held by police officers. Officers could be forced to give up outside employment that poses conflicts of interest with the department or city.

    The city's employee handbook, adopted in 2004, addresses outside employment for certain employees but Mayor Barbara Ewing said the resolution clarifies that the works board, which oversees police-department policies, has the power to restrict officers from working jobs that could pose a conflict.

    Calls on U.S. to lead the world, not follow others

    TELL CITY - Former Ninth District Congressman Mike Sodrel's keynote talk to local Republicans Thursday was as much about civics and the role of the Unites States in world affairs as about regaining the seat he lost two years ago to Democrat Baron Hill.

    The main speaker for the Perry County Republican Lincoln Day Dinner at Bill and Dave's Smokin' Pit, Sodrel asked his audience to consider the risks faced by the nation's founding fathers as they prepared to sign the Declaration Independence.

  • Graves: Cleanup 'a work in progress'

    CANNELTON - A newcomer to Cannelton expressed disgust to longtime resident Eunice Malcomson about the appearance of some parts of the city, Malcomson said at a regular meeting of the city's board of public works and safety Monday.

    "She's new to town, and said it's a pretty town," Malcomson told the city leaders, but "here comes Dogwood Week, here we've got company coming, and there's so much crap around."

  • Freedom ends for 2 escapees

    Warrick County deputies, troopers capture Day, Helsley

    NEWBURGH - Two escapees from the Branchville Correctional Facility were captured Tuesday evening after they allegedly crashed a stolen car along Indiana 66 in Warrick County while trying to outrun state police and sheriff's deputies.

    Conan Helsley, 20, and Kent Day, 45, had been on the run since scaling a prison fence the night of April 4. They allegedly stole a truck from J.H. Rudolph & Co.'s asphalt plant near Interstate 64 before fleeing to western Kentucky.

    Dr. Matthew Butler of Butler Family Dentistry in Tell City takes a look at 4-year-old Cameron Rogier's teeth during Tuesday's health fair at Perry Central Community School. A large crowd visited booths for screenings and information on a variety of health and safety topics, including sleep disorders, substance abuse prevention and assisted-living services. Rogier was a bit leery of having his teeth examined but changed his mind after his sister, Mikayala, said there wasn't anything to it.
