  • Pool opens Thursday, lessons soon

    TELL CITY - The JFK Pool in Tell City will open for the summer beginning Thursday.

    Hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

    The pool will have swimming lessons June 10 to July 2. Sessions are Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. and 6:10 to 6:55 p.m.

  • TCHS band members earn awards

    Roccia, Mueller take top honors

    TELL CITY - Student performers reaped awards and a resigning assistant director was bid farewell at a Tell City High School Band awards banquet Friday at Mulzer Camp west of Troy.

    Sarah Roccia earned the John Philip Sousa Band Award, given for outstanding loyalty, interest and achievement in musicianship, according to Music Director Barry Reasoner. In addition to the honor, he noted, Roccia was receiving "some really cool paperwork," a small bust of Sousa and a lapel pin.

  • City department celebrates employee return

    TELL CITY - Tell City's department heads updated the Board of Public Works and Safety on numerous items during its May 19 meeting, including receipt of a new trash truck.

    Street Commissioner Jeff Everly told members the new trash truck arrived and was taken out on the Monday route and just needs a few more adjustments before it's 100 percent ready. "I feel like we need a moment of applause because of how long we've been waiting," Mayor Barb Ewing said.

  • Schools chief: Longer year helps students retain learning

    Chapman reports Title 1 grant increase

    CANNELTON - Cannelton City Schools Superintendent Al Chapman said signs are encouraging that the school calendar in use the last two years has resulted in improved retention of information by students.

    "They spend less time out of school, and more information is retained," he said after the May 14 school-board meeting. "I feel like we're seeing (improvements) in our test scoring and in attitudes toward school," he explained. "It's still early, but if it continues to be a trend, we want to continue it."

  • Protocol problem

    Several veterans called Tell City Mayor Barbara Ewing, she said Thursday, to inform her banners recently hung from new light poles along Main Street are in violation of flag protocol. The blue field of stars for each is supposed to be opposite the vertical pole from which it's hung, as are those on the right side of this photo. Because of the way they were printed, they can't be flipped to hang as they should. Ewing said the banners were existing stock at a manufacturer purchased "in good faith" through Directions Promotions of Tell City.

  • City launches fee for untagged, improperly tagged trash

    TELL CITY - Not putting trash tags, or half of one, will end up costing residents $5 per bag if city employees pick them up before properly tagged.

    Members of the Tell City Board of Public Works and Safety amended section 55.09 of ordinance 937 May 19 to add a fee for residents who get their untagged or improperly tagged bags picked up by city employees. Mayor Barbara Ewing said the issue was brought up a couple of months ago on how to deal with these residents.

  • Recorder hopes to prevent resale of public records

    Commissioners approve animal-shelter contract

    TELL CITY - Perry County commissioners tabled at a regular meeting May 19 a request from County Recorder Jane James to implement rules for fining people who resell information provided by her office.

    The Indiana Code requires the recorder to provide batches of information to "bulk users," those who want information on transactions performed over a day, week, month or year, James explained.

  • Offices closed for Memorial Day

    PERRY COUNTY - Governmental offices across the county will be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day.

    Municipal offices in Tell City, Cannelton and Troy will be closed for the day. Trash pickup will be delayed by one day next week in Cannelton and Tell City.

    Also closed Monday will be county offices in the courthouse and courthouse annex and prosecutor's office. The Perry County Office of Family and Children and Perry County News will also be closed.

  • Hubert encourages public to remember veterans year-round

    TELL CITY - Remember and respect. Those are the most important things anyone can do for veterans, said Wayne Hubert.

    A veteran himself, Hubert served three years in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1966. While in the service, he was able to go to get a college education and serve his country. Last year, Hubert found a new way to help fellow veterans by becoming the Perry County Veterans Services officer.

    "I wanted to help other veterans and I had more time to do it," he said of why he applied for the job.
