Vic Schutzius, son of a Troy-area farm family, spent weeks in a German prisoner-of-war camp after his capture in early 1945. Stalag IV-B was later liberated by Russians. The pages of News archives from the time list several soldiers and airmen who were held in German camps.

The war had to end soon, at least in Europe. American servicemen were leading Allied charges across France and into the heart of Germany. Russian armies were doing the same on the Eastern fronts. Germany’s war machine was being crippled and once-believable Nazi claims to be building a thousand-year empire, were doomed. Soon, all of Europe would be free and the boys would be coming home.
