The Rev. Daniel Gadbaw, pastor of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Tell City, places ashes on the foreheads of Mandi Mogan (above) and Isaiah Warner (next) during a noon service Wednesday. In a brief homily, Gadbaw said the ashes are a visible sign that Lent is a period of prayer, penance and sacrifice. However, he also said the 40 days preceding Easter can also be a reminder of the power of forgiveness. Many churches across the county held special Ash Wednesday services and many will hold Lenten services, talks and breakfasts during the coming weeks. Lent falls early on the calendar this year. Easter Sunday is March 27.
