  • PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. – Marine Corps Pvt. Kyle R. Scherzer, son of Dale and Stacy Scherzer of Haubstadt and grandson of Robert and Margie Scherzer of New Boston, earned the title of United States Marine after graduating from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Island.

  • PERRY COUNTY – Area Girl Scouts are readying to take cookie orders from Jan. 2 through Jan. 18.
    This year’s sale will offer eight varieties of cookies: Thin Mints, Shortbreads, Peanut Butter Sandwiches, Peanut Butter Patties, Caramel deLites, Thanks-a-Lots, Lemonades and a new variety, Mango Cremes.
    The Mango Cremes are a crunchy vanilla and coconut cookie with a mango-flavored filling.

  • PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. – Marine Corps PFC Spencer J. Herzog graduated from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Deport, Parris Island Nov. 21.

    The 13-weeek course included close-order drill, marksmanship with M-16A4 riffles, physical fitness, martial arts, swimming, military history, customs and courtesies. Herzog was also honored with an award for the highest shooter in his platoon.

  • TELL CITY – The Perry County Public Library – Tell City branch will host a Christmas story time and caroling experience for all the young at heart from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.
    Tell City native and professional singer and performer Lisa Lawalin McTighe will lead caroling with traditional classic Christmas carols. There will also be a special Christmas story and craft session.
    The public is welcome to join the library staff for this Christmas sing-a-ling-a-ling story time and caroling. The program is free to all.

  • The Women’s Guild of the Evangelical United Church of Christ recently donated $250 to the Perry County Council on Aging. Council President Jean Etienne, right, accepts the donation check from guild member Melba Ayer.

    The Guild also donated $250 equally to the Perry County Food Coalition, Crisis Connections and the Perry County Council of Agencies. The church donates proceeds from its fall bazaar each year to local charities.

  • HAWESVILLE, Ky. – Hawesville Baptist Church welcomes the Rev. Barry E. Fields as the new church pastor.  
    Fields has spent the last five years in Buffalo, Ky., and began serving in Hawesville Nov. 18.  Everyone is invited to join the congregation each Sunday at 8:45 a.m. for Sunday School and at 10 a.m. for morning worship. The church is located at 290 Main Street in Hawesville.

  • Gospel sing at Little Pigeon Saturday
    LAMAR – Little Pigeon Baptist Church, located two-tenths of a mile east of U.S. 231 on County Road 1250 N., will host a gospel sing Saturday at the church.
    Special guest singers will be Rejoicing Souls. Refreshments will be served at 6 p.m. and singing will begin at 7 p.m.
    All are welcome to attend.

  • MONTICELLO, Minn. – Cargill Kitchen Solutions, headquartered in Monticello, recognized eight employee stakeholders with its annual Eagle Award. Travis Harpenau of Mason City, Iowa, was one of the stakeholders recognized.

  • PERRY COUNTY – Daisy Girl Scout Troop 503 is collecting donations of personal-care items to aid families of the area.
    Items being accepted include shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, hairbrushes, combs, soap and baby items.  Trial sized or full sized donations are welcome.  Items may be dropped off now through Dec. 7 at The Perry County News office located at 537 Main Street or at Gladish Chiropractic Clinic located at 1430 Main Street.  

  • TELL CITY – The Hoosier Heights Ladies will host an auction at 7 p.m. Dec. 5, at the Hoosier Heights Country Club. The auction will feature a live auction as well as a silent auction.

    Traci Coyle will conduct the live auction. As part of the evening’s activities there will be a half-pot drawing and a cash raffle. A bake sale is part of the event.
    A buffet dinner of fried chicken and roast beef will start at 5 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
