  • Catholic Charities gives coats to those in need

    PERRY COUNTY – Catholic Charities is currently conducting its annual winter coat and blanket give-away.
    If you or someone you know needs a winter coat, organizers ask they come to Catholic Charities for assistance.
    Due to the generosity of local residents, the group has a very good supply of coats for all ages - small children through adults. There are also several blankets to choose from.
    There is no charge for these items for anyone who needs a winter coat or blanket. Contact Catholic Charities at 547-0903 for more information.

  • Memorial Hospital to sponsor women’s event

    JASPER – A morning devoted to women’s health is planned for Jan. 14 at the Huntingburg Event Center. Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center’s “Women of the Heartland” will feature cardiologist Dr. Mary Walsh of Indianapolis, who is a nationally recognized expert on women and heart disease.
    Her keynote speech will be “Heart Disease in Women: Am I at Risk?”

  • Benefit for Tyler Cundiff Dec. 17

    HUNTINGBURG – A celebration-of-life cancer benefit will be held from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Dec. 17 at Gaslight Pizza and Grill in Huntingburg for Tyler Cundiff.
    Cundiff was diagnosed with leukemia in November. In an effort to ease the financial burdens and daily needs, his family and friends will host the benefit in his honor. The public is encouraged and invited to attend.
    Cover charge is $7 per person. Those under the age of 21 will be allowed into the benefit until 10 p.m.
    Live music will be provided by Silly Rules, Seahorse Bandits and more.

    Conservation Club to meet today
    LEOPOLD – The Leopold Conservation Club will meet at 7 p.m. today at the clubhouse.

  • Patoka Lake Visitor Center remains open with winter hours

    BIRDSEYE – Patoka Lake Visitor Center will remain open throughout the winter. Winter hours will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
    Visitors can join the naturalist for fun, family programs Saturdays. Scouts and school groups are welcome as well.
    Does your scout group need help earning a badge? How about teachers looking for a fun educational experience for your students?

  • River Sweep contest deadline Dec. 14

    PERRY COUNTY – Deadline for the River Sweep poster contest is approaching quickly. Students in primary and secondary schools - public and private, K-12 - are invited to design a poster for the 23rd annual River Sweep 2012.
    The poster contest is open to students living in or attending schools in counties bordering the Ohio River, or counties participating in the River Sweep. This includes all counties along the Ohio River in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, West Virginia, Illinois and Pennsylvania.
