  • Hagan seeking donations for Down Syndrome Awareness walk

    PERRY COUNTY – Ashley Hagan is collecting donations for the Down Syndrome Awareness walk scheduled for Sept. 14 at Smothers Park on the riverfront in Owensboro, Ky.

    The collected donations will help fund education activities, social events and new parent outreach, hospital outreach and workshops. Donations may be dropped off at the William Tell Center, 1307 11th St., Tell City, or at the home of Ed and Dorothy Hoffman, 1239 13th St., Tell City. Donations are tax deductible.

  • Grandview Fall Fest to host The Wall that Heals

    GRANDVIEW – The traveling Vietnam War veterans memorial will arrive in Spencer County Sept. 9 and be on display at the Grandview ball field from Sept. 11 to 15 and in conjunction with the Grandview Fall Festival, to be held Sept. 13 and 14.

  • Block bash in French Lick to begin Sept. 20

    FRENCH LICK – The 2013 Block Bash, a chainsaw carving competition, will be held Sept. 20 through Sept. 22 in the French Lick Town Green.
    The event will feature 10 of the top carvers in the country, according to organizers. The carvers will compete for three days on eight-hour masterpiece sculptures. Activities  will be from noon to 9 p.m. Sept. 20 and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 21 and 22. All carvings will be auctioned Sept. 21 and 22 at 5 p.m.

    Health Department closed Tuesday
    PERRY COUNTY – The Perry County Health Department offices in the courthouse annex in Cannelton will be closed Tuesday due to renovations.

  • Archaeology Month starts Sunday; theme centers around French influence

    SPENCER COUNTY – Hoosier history buffs can meet archaeologists and learn about the state’s fascinating past during Indiana Archaeology Month in September.
    Archaeology Month is an opportunity to celebrate and learn about Indiana archaeology, a press release from the Department of Natural Resources stated. Events for all ages are held all month by universities, museums, organizations and individuals throughout Indiana. The DNR Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology coordinates Archaeology Month.

  • Reunions, Aug. 29

    Saalman family
    BRANCHVILLE – The second annual Saalman family reunion will be Aug. 31 at the Branchville Conservation Club. A pot-luck dinner will start at 12:30 p.m.
    Those attending are asked to take pictures, family information and more.
    The reunion will focus on the life of Major Otis Saalman and family.
    All are invited to arrive early and spend the day.

  • Benefit auction, set for dance Sept. 14

    TELL CITY – The friends and family of Larry Taylor will host a benefit auction and dance to help raise funds for medical bills and expenses.
    The event will be from 6 to 11 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Tell City American Legion Post on Indiana 66.
    Admission will be $15 per person or $25 per couple.
    There will be live music by “Good Ole Boys,” food and a cash bar.
    Cash donations may be made at Fifth Third Bank in Tell City to the “Benefit of Larry Taylor” account.
    Taylor has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

  • Strong Bodies, Safe Families 5K Oct. 5
  • VFW summer picnic set for Oct. 6

    TELL CITY – Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2939 will host its annual family picnic Oct. 6 at Mulzer Camp west of Troy.
    Members and their families, plus the ladies and men’s auxiliary units and their families are invited to attend.
    The post will furnish the meat, potatoes and drinks. Those attending are asked to take a covered dish or dessert.
    Dinner will begin around 12:30 p.m.
