  • Saint Meinrad will host black history lecture Feb. 18

    ST. MEINRAD – Greg C. Adams, an archivist at the Smithsonian’s Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, will deliver the annual Black History Lecture at Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology.

    His lecture, “The Banjo and the American Experience: Looking Behind the Mask of ‘America's Instrument,’” will be given Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. in St. Bede Theater. He will trace the development of what we know as the modern banjo from its African origins through American slavery to the present time.

  • Archabbey Relay for Life team to host trivia night

    ST. MEINRAD –The Abbey Press-Saint Meinrad Archabbey’s Relay for Life team will hold its third annual Trivia Night fundraiser March 1. Sign up will begin at 6:30 p.m. CST  and playing starts at 7 p.m. at the Archabbey Guest House and Retreat Center dining room in St. Meinrad.

    The event will include an evening of matching of wits. Each team will answer the same questions and may consist of two to four players.
    Participants are invited to organize their own team or may choose to be assigned to a team. The winning team takes home $50.

    Saint Meinrad Archabbey accepts state land-conservation award
    SPENCER COUNTY – The Rev. Guy Mansini OSB, a member of the Benedictine community of  Saint Meinrad Archabbey, traveled to Indianapolis Jan. 7 to accept a Friend of Conservation Award from the Indiana Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts.

    Christmas candlelight service planned
    TELL CITY – The annual Christmas candlelight service will be held at Community Christian Church at 10 a.m. Dec 22. The service will feature the children’s choir and several adults will participate with Scripture readings and testimonies. Visitors of all ages are welcome to share in this Christmas celebration. Community Christian Church is located in the old Newman School at 821 10th Street in Tell City.

    First Baptist Christmas brunch and live nativity Saturday

    TELL CITY – First Baptist Church invites all women and children of the church to attend a Christmas Brunch at 9 a.m. Saturday in the Fellowship Hall. They will also share a devotion and make decorations for the Christmas tree.

    TELL CITY – Local congregations will host their annual Thanksgiving ecumenical worship celebration at 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul Catholic Church. Each year the churches in the community come together to celebrate God’s blessings and presence.

    Piano, violin concert Sunday at archabbeyST. MEINRAD – A free concert featuring piano and violin performances will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday in the St. Gregory Hall Gallery across from the Saint Meinrad Archabbey Library.

    Diane Earle, artist in residence and professor of music at Kentucky Wesleyan College and Alfred Abel, visiting artist in violin at Kentucky Wesleyan, will present the program.

    Monte Cassino pilgrimages conclude Sunday
     
    SAINT MEINRAD – Saint Meinrad Archabbey’s pilgrimages to honor the Blessed Mother at the Monte Cassino Shrine will conclude Sunday with a 2 p.m. service.

    The pilgrimage will begin with an opening hymn and a short sermon, followed by a rosary procession. The service ends with the Litany of the Blessed Virgin and a hymn.

    Archabbot Justin DuVall OSB will offer an address Sunday titled “Mary, Mother of the Light.”

    The public is invited.

     ST. MEINRAD – “Take one – and take heart. Give one – and give hope.” That tagline has graced the front of every CareNotes booklet for the last 25 years.
    The eight-page inspirational – and informational – booklets have been published by Abbey Press in St. Meinrad since 1988. Tackling topics such as depression, losing a child, facing cancer and others, Care-Notes booklets have sold more than 122 million copies since then.

  • Fall dinner theaters to end

    LEWISPORT, Ky. – Jean Mattingly, director of God’s Players, has announced the 2013 fall dinner theater will be the last one.
    This year’s show will be a nostalgic look at the previous 19 years of entertainment. It is scheduled for Nov. 8, 9 and 10 at the Lewisport Community Center.
    Friday and Saturday nights will have the dinner at 7 p.m., with show time at 8 p.m., and Sunday afternoon’s dinner will be at 12:30 p.m. with the show following.
    Tickets are on sale now for $25 and seating will be according to purchase paid date.
