  • Saint Meinrad monk, noted historian, author dies

    ST. MEINRAD – The Rev. Cyprian Davis OSB, a long-time monk and priest of Saint Meinrad Archabbey, died Monday at Memorial Hospital in Jasper. He was 84 and a jubilarian of both profession and ordination. Surviving are a cousin and a niece.

    Davis was born in Washington, D.C., Sept. 9, 1930, to Clarence W. and Evelyn (Jackson) Davis, who named him Clarence John.

    He studied at Saint Meinrad Seminary from 1949 to 1956. Invested as a novice monk July 31, 1950, he professed his simple vows Aug. 1, 1951, and was ordained to the priesthood May 3, 1956.

  • Sixty-one earn degrees from Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology

    ST. MEINRAD – Graduates of Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology were awarded master’s degrees on May 9.

    Graduates accepted their diplomas from the Rev. Justin DuVall OSB, archabbot of Saint Meinrad Archabbey and chairman of the school’s board of trustees.

    The graduation address was given by the Most Rev. Timothy Doherty, bishop of the Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana.

    Cannelton Freewill Baptist to host guest singers May 27

     

    Cannelton Freewill Baptist Church will welcome Brother Jonathan and Tiffany Epley of Johnson City, Tenn., later this month for a special address and singing engagement. The Epleys will join Pastor Lewis Garrett and the congregation at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 27. Everyone is invited to attend.

    Monastery to show free movie May 29

     

    FERDINAND – The next free movie Friday with the Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand will be May 29 with the 1:30 p.m. EDT showing of “Wild” in St. Gertrude Hall at the monastery.

    Reece Witherspoon stars in “Wild” as Cheryl Strayed. After years of reckless behavior, a heroin addiction and the destruction of her marriage, Strayed sets out to hike more than a 1,000 miles on the Pacific Crest Trail all on her own.

    Popcorn and a beverage will be provided.

  • Archabbey Library Gallery to host exhibit of icons

    ST. MEINRAD – Saint Meinrad Archabbey Library Gallery will host an exhibit of icons through June 23.

    The tradition of icon painting is still vibrant. An essential element within the architecture of the Eastern Orthodox Church, icons depict a world of saints, biblical narratives, the Virgin and Christ.

    This exhibit showcases the work of four contemporary icon painters working in a variety of media, including egg tempera on board enhanced with gold leaf, and painting on glass and with acrylics.

    DCBC to host ‘Purse Full of Blessings’

     

    TELL CITY – Deer Creek Baptist Church in Tell City will host a “girls’ night out” for all ages.

    A Purse Full of Blessings will begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 8, at the church. Guests are asked to take a finger food or dessert and a gently-used purse containing an item of $5 or less to share.
