Wilgus family gathers for 40th annual reunion

JASPER – The 40th annual Wilgus Family Reunion was held Saturday, July 19, at the Ramada Inn and Convention Center in Jasper. The reunion is a gathering of the descendants and friends of Chester and Agnes (Hagedorn) Wilgus, lifelong residents of Tell City and Anderson Township in Perry County. In all, over 140 descendants were in attendance, including two children, 20 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 37 great-great grandchildren. Attendees came from all over Indiana and from an additional eight states.

Those from Perry County included Charlie and Sue Wilgus, Ilean Schmidt, Mona and Kenny Elder and Jayne (Claise) Glenn, all of Tell City and Rivaye and Justin Zarfos and family from Derby.

From Spencer and Dubois Counties were Sandy and Tony Waninger and Danielle and Reid Waninger from Fulda; Brandy and Chris Schaefer and daughter from Dale; Clara (Lamar) Wilgus, Carol Jean Wilgus, and Marci and Michael Hansen, all of Ferdinand and Ron, Shelly, Kyle and Jared Wilgus of Schnellville.

Also in attendance from other parts of Indiana were Mabel (Wilgus) Craig, Della Anderson, Terry Brinker, Brielle Updike and family, David Lottes, and Rick and Tonya Wilgus, all of Evansville; Shannon Lance and Taylor Riddick of Mt. Vernon; Hope, Braden and Bryce Kunard of Sellersburg; Faith Hatton, Jennifer Lee and son, and Chris and Candace Hatton and family, all from Deputy and Jimmy Wilgus from Merrillville.

From Indianapolis came Mabel (Schmidt) Wilgus; Don and Carolyn Wilgus; Andrew, Stephany Clark and sons; Chris and Linda Wilgus; Tami and Justin Wilgus; Sara, Roger and Noah Hill; Adam and Jaclyn Hill; Alan and Kimmie Browning and family; Stacey Clark Glover and Daniella Glover; and Sharea Brehm and Patrick Clark, all of Indianapolis. From Shelbyville was Kim Wilgus and Dennis Shadday; Amy Bennett and sons; Aaron and Laken Jenkins and family and Linda and Barry Graves.

From out of state came Tom and Pat Wilgus of Madisonville, Ky.; Steve and Diane Wilgus from Goodlettsville, Tenn.; Paul and Cheryl Pitney and daughters of Burns, Tenn.; Jordan, Deana and Kellen Graves, of Spring Hill, Tenn., and Kathy Clark and Michael Clark from Springfield, Ill. Also attending were Sharon Bos and Don Wiseman and girls from Southerland, Ohio; Donnie, and Carrie Wilgus and family from Hastings, Mich., and Jeff Wilgus from Albany, Ga.

Also from afar were Terry Wilgus; Maria, Dale, Bryan, Lisa and Matthew Greenberg, all of Port Charlotte, Fla.; Patti and Maarten Bos from Sarasota, Fla.; Joanie and Michael Gray and son from Tampa, Fla.; Logan Wilgus of Bellevue, Wash., and Bradley Wilgus and Phillip Wilgus from Pullman, Wash.

The reunion served as the 90th birthday celebration of one of the family matriarchs, Mabel (Schmidt) Wilgus, who turned 90 July 2. It was also recognized that the oldest living family member and longtime reunion attendee, Regina (Claise) Wilgus, age 91 from Indianapolis, was unable to attend this year’s event on account of her health. The family also paid note to family members lost in the recent past to include oldest grandson, James C. Wilgus, at age 70, who passed in September, 2013; Delmar and Clara Maye (Coultas) Claise of Tell City and longtime reunion attendees and also a great-grandchild, Daniel Wilgus Clark of Indianapolis, who passed away in 2013 at age 33.

The family enjoyed a catered-in dinner of fried chicken, fixings and desserts, with many coming into Jasper as early as Thursday, July 17 and most remaining through Sunday, July 20.

The 41st annual Wilgus Reunion will be held at the Ramada Inn and Convention Center in Jasper, Saturday, July 18, 2015.
