TELL CITY—Matt Coudret’s 28 points helped Mater Dei overcome Tell City’s hot start and beat the Marksmen 62-53 in boys basketball Tuesday.

The Marksmen, led by Shane Weedman, hit 8 of their first 10 field-goal attempts and built a 22-14 lead with 7 seconds left in the first quarter.

They kept the lead until Coudret made a steal and layup to put the Wildcats ahead 35-34 with 5:44 left in the third quarter.

Coudret scored 16 points in the second half on six field goals--all from within 7 feet of the basket—and 4 of 4 free throws.

Either scoring in transition or using his quickness to drive into the lane, he hit 11 of 12 two-point shots for the game (he was 0 for 4 from three-point range).

He and other Wildcats got some fast-break layups thanks to Tell City’s 21 turnovers.

But the Marksmen also forced 18 Mater Dei turnovers and played well in other phases of the game.

They outshot the Wildcats from the field 51.3 percent to 46.7 percent and grabbed 26 rebounds, just one short of the Wildcats.

Weedman, a 6-foot-3 junior forward, led Tell City with a career-high 19 points and nine rebounds. He hit his first five shots from the field and finished 7 for 8.

He scored mostly inside but also hit a 10-foot baseline shot and two jumpers from 15-18 feet.

“I thought he played like a man,” said Tell City Coach John Hayes.

Sean Flannagan added 13 points for the Marksmen.

The Marksmen held Mater Dei star guard Hank LaRue to nine points and held center Marc Weinzapfel, who was in foul trouble much of the game, scoreless.

But Hayes was not surprised Coudret came through for the Wildcats. “We knew Coudret was good too. Everybody we talked to said he has really improved.”

Hayes thought the Marksmen “rushed some things a little bit when we were down six with six minutes to go. We forced a couple of shots.”

Still he thought overall “this was our best effort of the year. We definitely haven’t faced a quicker team.”

Tell City fell to 3-10 while Mater Dei improved to 6-6.

The Marksmen will visit Crawford County Saturday at 7 p.m.
