TELL CITY—Tell City gave up second shots in the fourth quarter in 53-44 loss to Mater Dei in boys basketball Friday night.
With 5:45 left in the game, Tell City’s Grant Sanders made a short jumper to cut Mater Dei’s lead to five, 43-38.
On Mater Dei’s next possession Jacob Stauber made a basket.
Stauber, a 6-foot-3 junior forward, scored 10 of the Wildcats 14 points in the fourth quarter.
He frequently used a high pick set by Ben Sellers to drive down the foul lane.
“I was frustrated out there because we didn't do some of the things we normally do that would help us win the game,” said Tell City Coach Brent Owen. “We went over some ball screens instead of going under them. I think they scored eight points (in the fourth quarter) on us by doing that.”
Mater Dei stopped Tell City on three consecutive offensive trips down the floor.
Driving baskets by Stauber, Sellers and Stauber opened the Wildcats’ lead to 11, 49-38, with 3:06 left.
Tell City's Gant Miller made two free throws, then Mater Dei's Sellers made a short jumper putting the Wildcats back up by 11.
“We did some uncharacteristic things in the second half,” said Owen. “They were getting some rebounds and we had two or three guys  going after the guy who got the rebound. I guess they we’re trying to come up with a steal. We always sprint back and cover our basket. That cost us a couple of layups.
“I thought we battled the whole game. Mater Dei is a really good team. It’s good to know that we’re that close to being there. My goal for this team is to have Mater Dei be a little bit concerned about us come sectional time.
“We’ve been climbing and climbing and climbing for two years. I can see over the edge and I’m ready to go down the slide. We’re going to keep working.”
Sanders led the Marksmen with 12 points. Brennan Malone added 11 points and led them with eight rebounds.
Mater Dei outrebounded Tell City 21-13.
Stauber scored 21 points  and Sellers grabbed eight rebounds for the Wildcats.
Tell City dropped to 3-10. while Mater Dei improved to 6-5.
