BRETZVILLE—Shelley Schmitt threw a no-hitter as North Posey beat Perry Central 19-0 in the Class 2A girls softball sectional semifinals Wednesday.
Schmitt walked two and struck out 12 in the game, which ended in five innings by the 10-run rule.
Both the walks came in the first inning, and both runners advanced a base on a passed ball.
With one out, Cassy Schaad tried to score on Kristi Brumfield’s ground ball to the left side but was thrown out at the plate.
The Commodores never had another runner reach base.
“She (Schmitt) threw pretty hard,” said Perry Central Coach Greg Gibson. “And we just haven’t hit the last three games now.”
North Posey had only four hits but took advantage of 11 walks, two hit batsmen, five wild pitches and four Perry Central errors.
And one of the Vikings’ hits was a grand slam over the left-field fence by Lisa Garris in the first inning. It followed a hit batsman, an error and a walk.
Brumfield pitched the first 22⁄3 innings for Perry Central to take the loss. She gave up three hits and nine walks and struck out none.
Seven of the 16 runs she allowed were unearned.
“Our pitching wasn’t sharp and we didn’t make some plays,” said Gibson. “We have to be perfect every night because we’re not going to strike out a lot of batters.
“We made some strides this year, though. Our team batting average improved and our pitching got better, though it didn’t show tonight.”
Perry Central finished the season 4-16 while North Posey advanced to the finals with a 21-6 record.
