ROCKPORT - Braxton Williams and Kent Schmitt combined for all of North Posey's hits as the Vikings beat Perry Central 3-0 in the first round of the South Spencer Class 2A baseball sectional Monday.
The game was basically a pitching duel between North Posey ace Adam Schroeder and Perry Central's Wes Linette, with North Posey getting four hits and Perry Central two.
But three of North Posey's hits went for extra bases, and the Vikings also scored two unearned runs thanks to two Perry Central errors.
They scored the first run in the first inning on a hit batsmen, a fielder's choice ground out, an error by the shortstop, and a sacrifice fly to center field by Williams.
Perry Central's Bo Gibson made a nice running catch to his right on Williams' fly.
The Vikings added another unearned run in the third on a walk, a single, an error by the second baseman, and a sacrifice fly to right by Schmitt.
They scored the final run in the fifth on doubles by Williams and Schmitt.
Schmitt led off the second inning with a triple, but Linette was able to pitch out of that jam, stranding him at second base.
Linette struck out six, walked five, and hit two batters as he pitched a complete game.
While his walk total was a little higher than Perry Central Coach Ty Guillaume wanted, Guillaume said, "He made the right pitches at the right times to get out of some jams."
Perry Central really threatened only once on offense, though.
In the third inning T.J. Lamon and Lucas Bryant drew consecutive walks, putting runners on first and second with no outs.
The Commodores' No. 9 batter then grounded into a 1-6-3 double play, though, and the next batter struck out to end the inning.
Linette walked and Austin Hauser was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second in the first inning.
But there were already two outs when Hauser reached base.
Perry Central's only hits for the game were a single to right field by Bryant and an infield single by Gibson.
"I was a little disappointed in the offensive side because we'd been swinging the bats pretty well," said Guillaume. "We did hit the ball but we hit it to them. We had quite a few fly-ball outs."
Schroeder struck out seven and walked three as he pitched his shutout.
"He had a decent fastball and he had good location on his curveball," said Guillaume.
Perry Central finished the season 9-16.
