EVANSVILLE—Tell City committed 20 turnovers in a 55-43 boys basketball loss to Mater Dei Friday.
Tell City Coach Brent Owen said, “We were down eight with about four minutes to go and missed a wide open three that would have cut it to five and made it a fun end of the game for us.
“We missed that wide open three-point shot, they went in and got a bucket; then all of the sudden we are down 10 with four minutes to go. That five-point swing is what ended the game for us. We had to start fouling.”
After the Marksmen missed a three-point shot, Mater Dei’s Tyler Walsh made a layup putting the Wildcats up 47-36 with 3:32 to go in the game.
The Marksmen played a deliberate offense and with 2:31 left Brian Arnold made a three-pointer from the left wing.
Walsh scored 10 of his game high 20 points in the fourth quarter. He also grabbed eight of Mater Dei’s 21 rebounds.
“Mater Dei did a great job stepping up at the end of the game and making free throws,” said Owen. The Wildcats made 6 of 8 at the line the last 1:39.
The game was tied at the end of the first quarter, but the Wildcats took a 25-20 halftime lead.
Tell City was limited to seven points in the third quarter, while Mater Dei scored 13 that period. The Wildcats started the quarter with a 9-2 run in which Walsh scored twice inside, Will LaRue made a three-pointer from the left wing, and Jacob Fleming hit a layup.
Trent Zuelly finished with 14 points to lead Tell City. Brennan Malone grabbed six of the Marksmen’s 20 rebounds.
The Marksmen outshot the Wildcats from the field 53.1 percent (17 of 32) to 50.0 percent (20 of 40).
Mater Dei improved to 7-5. Tell City dropped to 2-11.
Tell City will visit Ohio County Friday at 7:30 p.m.
