TELL CITY – Amber Taylor went 4 for 4 as Tri-State Service & Maintenance beat Smitty’s Memorial Team 10-9 Thursday to clinch the Tell City Women’s Softball League regular-season title.
Tri-State improved to 7-1 while Smitty’s slipped to 6-2. Each has one game remaining, but Tri-State would win the tie-breaker because it beat Smitty’s two out of three times.
Tri-State becomes just the third team to win the regular-season title in the last 30 years. Citizens National Bank won it 12 years in a row, 1984-95, and then Smitty’s won it 17 years in a row, 1996-2012.
Bridget Bruggeman, Lauren Blake and Laura James each had two of Tri-State’s 15 hits to back Taylor Thursday. Tri-State also drew six walks.
Brittany Roark went 3 for 4 with a triple and a double to lead Smitty’s 19-hit attack.
Kyli Smithson also had three hits and Lauren Goffi-net, Jaci Garrett, Amber Thomas, Natalie Cole, Jamie Brinksneader and Paige Gelarden each added two.
Tri-State took a 10-9 lead in the sixth inning on singles by Blake, Taylor and Lacey Hawkins.
Smitty’s loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh on singles by Smithson, Thomas and Cole. But a pop-up to the shortstop and a double-play grounder ended the game.
