Santa Claus himself will be the guest of honor at three fast-approaching Christmas parades in Perry County. Cannelton and Tell City will host their respective post-Thanksgiving parades Nov. 23 and Nov. 25 with Leopold's Christmas parade scheduled for Dec. 2. All three events draw large crowds each year.
Cannelton Parade Nov. 23
Cannelton's Christmas Parade Nov. 23 is sponsored by Harry G. Myers American Legion Post 142, the Legion Post's auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion Detachment 142. Grand marshals this year are members of Rolling Thunder Indiana Chapter 7, a nonprofit organization that tries to raise public awareness of prisoners of war and military service members missing in action. The group also provides honor guards for veterans' funerals.
Parade lineup in Cannelton begins at 6 p.m. at Old Indiana 237, across from Randy Aubrey Dodge. At 7 p.m., participants will proceed along Indiana 66 (Seventh Street) to the traffic light at Indiana 66 and Washington (Main Street) where the parade will turn right and travel down Washington to First Street where entries will disband. Tell City entries are should arrive by either Mozart or Tell streets to reach Old Indiana 237 to avoid having to turn around on Old Indiana 237.
All organizations and individuals are welcome to enter the parade. However, dirt bikes or four-wheelers are not allowed with the exception of four wheelers pulling entries. Entries should display the name of the individual, business or organization sponsoring the float so the parade judges can see them.
There will be trophies awarded for civic and commercial entries. Anyone wanting to enter is asked to call Ruth Lawalin at 547-3671 or Mary Stephens after 5 p.m. at 547-8003. Entries will be accepted until parade lineup.
