MARENGO—Jillian Theis placed third in the freshman girls race to lead Perry Central in Crawford County’s cross country invitational Saturday.
There were separate races for each class in each gender and then the top five times of all runners from a school were added together to determine the school’s team score.
Perry Central finished 11th among 22 complete teams in the girls race and 22nd among 29 in the boys race.
The Commodores did not run their top four boys, though, as this was their third meet in eight days and they also had some tough workouts in that span.
Theis was the only one of their top four girls who ran. She had never run the Crawford County 5-kilometer course before and Perry Central Coach Jason Barnett wanted her to run it before the regional, which will be held there.
Theis completed the couse in 20:43. Cia Greene of Henryville won in 20:05 and Tara Cassidy of Jasper was second in 20:13.
Perry Central’s Sarah Schlachter also placed in the top half of that race, finishing 18th in 23:49.
No other Commodore girl finished in the top half of any of the races.
Perry Central’s Dakota Brewster placed 15th among 77 freshman boys in 19:20 and Luke Hubert was 18th in 19:33. Barnett said that earned them spots in the varsity race for Perry Central’s next meet.
Nathan Rogier, 27th in 20:17, was also in the top half in the freshman race.
Lance Elmer finished in the top half of the 75-boy junior race, placing 37th in 19:31.
Perry Central will run in Bedford North Lawrence’s invitational Saturday at 8 a.m.
