TELL CITY—Rallies in their last at-bats carried Tell City to girls softball victories Saturday and Monday.

The Marksmen beat Mount Vernon 3-1 Saturday with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning after Mount Vernon tied the score in the top of that inning.

A dropped pop-up, a double by Lauren Goffinet, and a walk to Josalyn Ress loaded the bases with no outs for Tell City in the bottom of the sixth.

Kyli Smithson scored the go-ahead run as the second baseman dropped Amber Thomas’ pop-up.

After a force out at home, Courtney Cain single home an insurance run.

Goffinet hit two doubles in three at-bats to lead Tell City’s six-hit attack.

Ress pitched a three-hitter for the win, striking out 11 and walking one.

Sydney Grass made a nice catch deep in the right-field corner in the third inning. The Marksmen turned it into a double play to snuff out a Mount Vernon rally.

Ress pitched 12 scoreless innings as Tell City nipped Hancock County 1-0 Monday.

She struck out a school-record 14 and walked three.

She also singled home the winning run in the 12th inning after a walk to Sydney Grass, a single by Smithson, and an error loaded the bases.

Cain had two of Tell City’s five hits for the game.

Eighth grader Mariah Hays pitched 10 scoreless innings for Hancock County before being relieved by Kristen Smith.

“Hancock County has a good team,” said Tell City Coach Dusty Beard. “They just finished second in the state in Class A (Kentucky’s All-A Classic) yesterday.”

Ress shut out Crawford County 10-0 Tuesday on a six-hitter. She walked none and struck out 12 in five innings, giving her 37 strikeouts in her last three games.

The win was her ninth of the season, tying the school record set by Alicia Doogs in 2007.

Smithson went 3 for 3 to lead Tell City’s nine-hit attack. Hana Reed added two hits.

Reed, Goffinet and Ress each hit a double.

Ress’ double drove in three runs in the bottom of the fifth to finish the game by the 10-run rule.

Tell City, 10-6, will visit Boonville today at 5 p.m.
