HUNTINGBURG—Trent Rainey drove in two runs and four Tell City pitchers combined to throw a five-hitter as the Marksmen upset Mater Dei 6-2 in a Class 2A baseball sectional first-round game Wednesday.
Tell City, 14-9, will play Southridge, ranked No. 10 in the state, in the semifinals today at 10 a.m.
Mater Dei entered Wed-nesday’s game ranked No. 5 in the state in Class 2A with a 20-6 record.
But the Wildcats were kept off balance by facing a different pitcher in each of their at-bats and did not score an earned run.
As Coach Jason Wilker-son planned before the game, C.J. Rowe, Reed Goffinet and Rhett Baumeister each pitched two innings for Tell City and Chris Schaefer pitched the seventh.
Besides keeping opposing hitters off balance, “I think it made the game simpler for our pitchers,” said Wilkerson. “Instead of thinking that they’ve got to last four or five innings, they could give it all they’ve got for six outs.”
Mater Dei took a 1-0 lead on an unearned run in the first inning.
Easton Ricketts reached base on a throwing error by the second baseman and advanced to third base on a wild pickoff throw by the pitcher. He scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Tyler Walsh.
Tell City took the lead for good the next inning, though. Austin Paulin and Gant Miller started the rally with consecutive walks.
Both runners moved up a base on Casey May’s sacrifice bunt. Pinch-runner Nathan Freeman then scored on Trent Rainey’s sacrifice fly to left field.
Reese Miller reached base on a two-out throwing error by the shortstop, allowing Miller to score the go-ahead run.
Tell City chased Mater Dei ace Joe Ritter from the mound in a four-run sixth inning.
Spenser Beard hit an RBI double to deep left field after Trent Zuelly walked to start the inning.
The Marksmen’s only other hits that inning were infield singles by Rainey and Reese Miller, each driving in a run.
Those insurance runs looked big when the Wildcats loaded the bases with just one out in the seventh inning and had Tyler Walsh, their No. 3 batter who has signed to play baseball for NCAA Division  I Belmont University, coming to the plate.
He popped up to the second baseman, though—the fourth out he made in four plate appearances. Schaefer then struck out Ben Sellers to end the game.
Wilkerson said the key to getting Walsh out was “we got ahead (in the count) and we were going to throw him junk. I think he got a little impatient at times.”
Each team had five hits, with no one getting more than one.
“We hit the ball hard,” though, said Wilkerson. “Spenser Beard made an out on one that he hit 340 feet.
“This is a huge win for our kids.”
He said Southridge is probably the sectional favorite now, though “I don’t think the rest of the teams are going to have a pitcher like Ritter.”
