FERDINAND—No Tell City players were selected to the All-PAC boys basketball team Monday, but seniors Matthew Watts and Brian Arnold received honorable mention.
Voting was done by conference coaches, with no coach allowed to vote for his own players.
Tell City Coach Brent Owen said he thinks the Marksmen “maybe could maybe have gotten one on there if” he had told the other coaches that he preferred they vote for one Tell City player over the other.
But he thought his two nominees were pretty evenly matched, so “I couldn’t say vote for Brian or vote for Matt.”
Heritage Hills junior forward Devon Merder was the top vote-getter on the team. He averaged 17.9 points and 7.4 rebounds per game, leading the conference in both categories.
The Patriots, who finished second in the nine-team conference at 7-1, also placed sophomore forward Gavin Schaefer on the team. He averaged 14.9 points and 5.3 rebounds per game and led the Patriots in three-points baskets with 43.
Southridge, which won the conference at 8-0, placed three players on the team: Ben Weber, Chad O’Bryan and Trey Reese, son of former Perry Central coach Dave Reese.
Every other school placed one player on the team except Tell City and Pike Central.
Tell City finished eighth in the conference at 1-6 and Pike Central was ninth at 0-7 (they did not play each other because of a cancellation).
Weber, Wes Harness of North Posey, and Spencer Schmitt of Gibson Southern were the only repeat selections from last year. Schmitt made it for the third time.
