JASPER—Tell City won four events and placed second in five to finish second in the 13-team girls swimming sectional Saturday.

No other team won more than two of the 12 events. But Jasper used its depth to beat Tell City for the title 286-247.

Only first-place finishers were guaranteed to advance to this weekend’s state meet.

“It was really a good day,” said Tell City Coach Mike Page. “We scored about 30 points more than we were seeded and Jasper dropped about 20 points, so we were able to put a little pressure on them. But depth-wise we just couldn’t compete with them.”

The Marksmen won two of the first three events and took second in the other. But at that point they trailed Jasper by nine points, as the Wildcats placed three girls in the top five in one of those events and three in the top 10 in another. Twelve places were scored in each event.

Tell City’s Chelsea Malone, Amanda Wagner, Erika Hauenstein and C.J. Fentress set a school record as they won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:53.82.

Malone, Wagner, Hauenstein and Jessica Wagner set the previous school record of 1:53.94 last year.

The same four girls who won the 200 medley relay also won the 200 freestyle  relay in 1:43.05.

Wagner also won the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.92—3.16 seconds ahead of the runner-up—and placed second in the 100 free in 56.44.

Hauenstein also won the 200 individual medley 2:23.89 and placed second in the 500 free in 5:40.07.

Malone placed second in the 50 free in 24.84 and in the 100 backstroke in 1:03.67.

Page noted that Malone’s 50 free time “would’ve won two or three (of the state’s 20) sectionals.”

Fentress placed second in the 200 free in 2:09.24 and third in the 100 free in 59.45.

Bailey Malone placed third in the 200 IM in 2:26.21 and teamed with Charissa Lahee, Alyson Goffinet and Jessica Ballman to take fourth in the 400 free relay in 4:14.46.

Hana Reed finished fourth in diving with 319.95 points. That qualified her for the diving regional, which was scheduled to be held Wednesday at Bloomington North.

Other Tell City scorers were:

200 free: Goffinet ninth in 2:23.43

100 butterfly: Bailey Malone seventh in 1:09.99

500 free: Goffinet ninth in 6:28.51

100 backstroke: Ballman seventh in 1:11.84 and Amber Fentress ninth in 1:13.16

100 breast: Taylor Childers 12th in 1:23.16.

The state meet will be held at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis. The trials will be Friday at 5 p.m. Perry County time and the finals Saturday at noon.

“We’ll probably be in the first heat in all four of our events,” said Page. “But I think we can improve.”
