HUNTINGBURG—Tell City placed all five of its scorers in the top 12 to win the PAC boys cross country meet Saturday.
Tell City scored 39 points, eight ahead of runner-up Gibson Southern.
“The boys ran their hearts out,” said Tell City Coach Chris Hollinden. “Gibson Southern prepared heavily for us throughout the week and had a strong plan to beat us.
“We took their best punch and found a way to get back up and rally to win. At the two-mile mark, we were down six points to them, but we rallied over the final mile to beat them by eight points.”
Forest Park’s Cody Flamion was the individual winner in 17:05 and Gibson Southern’s Hayden Baehl was second in 17:12.
But Tell City’s Sherry twins took the next two spots, with Caleb placing third in 17:15 and Cameron fourth in 17:16.
Brook Smith, ninth in 17:45, also made all-conference, an honor that goes to the top 10 finishers.
Donovan Ingle, 11th in 17:58, and Travis Brinksneader, 12th in 18:04, completed the Marksmen’s scoring.
Reed Goffinet, 16th in 18:27, and Clayton Byrne, 18th in 18:32, also finished for them.
Most runners’ times were about 30 seconds slower than last year because “rain and mud slowed the course quite a bit,” said Hollinden. “The rain got so heavy at the end of the race that we could barely see 50 yards!  It was wet, muddy, and fun!”
Tell City’s strong final mile helped make up for disappointing team finishes the last two years (second and third).
Tell City finished fourth among six complete teams in the girls race but “we ran our best race in probably two years,” said Tell City Coach Katie Weyer.
She added, “We had all five of our scorers in the top 19 and were only four points from (third-place) Southridge. They will be the team we have to beat to advance to regional next Tuesday (at the sectional).
“Everyone ran one of their best races of the year, which is what you want this time of the year.”
Hailey Carman placed 12th in 22:10 to lead Tell City. Tori Payne was 14th in 22:37 and Addie Terry 15th in 22:38.
Jalynn Pruitt was 17th in 22:40 and Mariah Blake 19th in 22:52 to complete the Marksmen’s scoring.
Mercedes Mendez, 33rd in 24:49, and Audrie Terry, 35th in 25:20, were the next two finishers for the Marksmen.
Tell City’s Seth Vaquero won the JV boys race in 18:45. Eli Reed was second in 19:22 and Stephen Houle third in 19:24.
Tell City will compete in the Jasper sectional Tuesday. The boys will run at 5 p.m. and the girls at 5:30 p.m.
