TELL CITY - Julie Davis, Katie Kalin and Paige Gelarden each made 10 digs as Tell City beat Evansville North 25-16, 25-22, 25-17 in a season-opening volleyball match Monday.
Tell City built huge leads early in the first game (10-2) and third game (11-3) and controlled those games the rest of the way.
The Marksmen also led most of the second game, though North narrowed their 20-15 lead to 23-22 on some bad returns by the Marksmen.
Tell City then scored a point on a North side out, though, and scored the final point on a Leslie Poole serve that North failed to return.
"Our serve-receive was OK except when they came back in that second game," said Tell City Coach Dalonda Hayes.
"But for our first match I thought we played well together. These girls had never played together before and they were nervous.
"Lauren Goffinet I thought played really well. This is just her second year playing volleyball and just last week I put her playing all the way around."
Goffinet led the Marksmen in kills with eight, including a powerful one that gave them a 6-2 lead in the third game.
Poole and Jamie Brinksneader each added five kills, and Elizabeth Kohnert made four blocks.
Davis had 22 assists to aid the hitters.
"I thought Julie played really well," said Hayes. "She hustled and got to everything she could."
Poole and Kalin each served three aces.
"We only had four bad serves, which is not bad," said Hayes.
Tell City also won the junior varsity match 21-25, 27-25, 18-16 as Brianna Simpson served 11 aces and Lauren Coyle made 11 digs.
Megan Austin made five kills, and Cassidy Barnhill and Devin Marchand each added four.
Miranda Zuelly had nine assists and Hana Reed added eight.
Tell City will visit Southridge for a PAC match tonight at 5.
