Tell City handcuffs Huskies

TELL CITY—Kyle Osborne drove in three runs and Trent Benningfield pitched five shutout innings as Tell City beat Evansville North 3-1 in baseball Tuesday.

Tell City scored two runs with two out in the first inning.

Mike Maddle doubled to right-center field and Trent Gunn was hit by a pitch.

Both runners moved up a base on a wild pickoff throw, and both scored on Osborne’s double to left-center.

The Marksmen added a run in the third inning on walks to Andy Chinn and Maddle and a single up the middle by Osborne.

Thus Osborne drove in all the Marksmen’s runs. He has five RBIs and two doubles in their last two games.

Benningfield walked two batters, hit two, and gave up two doubles.

But those were the only runners to reach base against him, as he gave up no other hits and his teammates played errorless defense behind him.

With one out and a North runner on second, Tell City second baseman Jordan Rhodes caught a line drive and doubled the runner off base to end a second-inning threat by the Huskies.

“I thought that was the key defensive play of the game,” said Tell City Coach Mark Wahl.

Benningfield, a sophomore, earned his first varsity win, but “he’s been an A-plus pitcher all season,” said Wahl. “He’s pitched well every outing.”

Trent Gunn pitched the last two innings for his second save. He gave up one unearned run in the sixth on a double and a two-out throwing error by the shortstop, the Marksmen’s only error.

Tell City outhit North 5-4. Osborne was the only batter with two hits.

Tell City lost a PAC road game 9-6 Saturday to South Spencer, which is undefeated and ranked ninth in the state in Class 2A.

Jared Daming’s three-run homer in the fourth inning was the big blow for the Rebels.

Gunn went 2 for 3 to lead Tell City’s seven-hit attack. Osborne drove in two runs with a first-inning double.

Jeff Braun, the second of three Tell City pitchers, took the loss.

Tell City, 2-4, will visit Harrison today at 5 p.m.
