TELL CITY—Tell City used its advantage in depth over most of the teams to go 4-1 in its own six-team, wrestling round-robin Satur-day.
The Marksmen beat Wood Memorial 72-12, North Posey 39-33, Mitchell 47-33, and Apollo 37-36 before losing 60-19 to Heritage Hills, which finished the day undefeated.
North Posey had only seven wrestlers but they were all quality ones (they went 30-5 for the day), so many thought it was possible the Vikings would win seven matches by pins and thus beat Tell City’s young team.
Tell City freshman Jarrett Hawhee put an end to those plans though. Wrestling in the 132-pound weight class most of the day, he bumped up to 138 against North Posey and beat Jordan Frymire 6-4 with a takedown in overtime.
Kain Crawford (152-pound class) also avoided getting pinned by going to overtime, though he lost 8-6.
Sophomore Mason Waninger (113) and senior Dakota Hedinger (126/132) each went 5-0 to lead Tell City for the day.
Heavyweight Cody Osborne went 4-0 with two pins. But Tell City Coach Joe Litherland held him out of a match against North Posey star Austin Little since Osborne had just been cleared to return from an injury.
Litherland said those two are the top competitors for the PAC heavyweight title and he wants Osborne to be full strength when he wrestles Little.
Tell City freshman Aubrey Craig went 4-1 with one pin in the 106 class, raising his season record to 7-1.
Travis Brinksneader (120), Hawhee, and Javier Mendez (170) each went 3-2.
Tell City wrestled a dual meet at Pike Central Tuesday, winning 42-39.
Brinksneader pinned Cody Whitehead in 39 seconds in the final match of the meet to give the Marksmen the come-from behind victory.
“Travis looked pretty good on his feet,” said Litherland. “That’s probably the most aggressive I’ve ever seen him.”
The Marksmen fell behind 39-12 but scored the maximum six points in each of the last five matches. Osborne, Craig and Brinksneader earned pins and Keith Holman (220) and Waninger won by forfeits.
Crawford and Mendez pinned their opponents for Tell City’s earlier wins.
“Javier was actually getting beat and he re-rolled the kid and took him to his back,” said Litherland.
Tell City, 5-4, will compete in a 10-team tourney at Harrison Friday at 4:30 p.m. and Saturday at 8 a.m.
