TELL CITY—Cody Osborne was the only Tell City wrestler to win a match as the Marksmen finished 16th in the 16-team Mater Dei Holiday Classic last weekend.
Union County, Ky., won the tourney with 203.5 points, the first time in the tourney’s 29-year history that the host team did not win it.
Tell City scored four points on the strength of a second-round pin by Osborne in the heavyweight division.
Osborne got pinned by No. 1 seed Nathan Wright of Mater Dei in 48 seconds in the first round.
Osborne then pinned Josh Small of Evansville Memorial in 1:37 but got pinned by Ray Brown of Union County in 0:25 in the double-elimination tourney.
Every other Tell City wrestler went 0-2.
Two of the Marksmen’s top wrestlers, Aubrey Craig in the 106-pound class and Mason Waninger at 113, drew No. 1 seeds in the first round. “So it put them behind the eight ball at the start,” said Tell City Coach Joe Litherland.
The Marksmen filled only 10 of the 14 weight classes. Javier Mendez, their 170-pounder, was gone on vacation and 195-pounder Dakota Alvey was sidelined with an injury.
Former Tell City wrestler J.R. Kieser, who now lives in Belleville, Ill., with his father, went 2-2 for Belleville West, which placed fourth in the tourney.
