TELL CITY - Paoli was hot and Tell City was cold as the Rams beat Tell City 73-62 in boys basketball Saturday.
The Marksmen hit a season-low 39.6 percent from the field, one of the few times they have hit less than 50 percent.
The Rams, ranked fifth in the state in Class 2A, hit 53.3 percent from the field as they improved to 13-1.
Tell City Coach John Hayes was not pleased with his team's defense as the Marksmen lost a home game for the second night in a row.
"Last night it was more just how good Castle was," he said. "But tonight we just didn't defend. It was a total team effort as far as not getting it done.
"I don't want to take anything away from Paoli. They're a good team. (Drew) White's a good player, (Logan) Laswell's a good player.
"But our level of play was sub-par."
White, a senior forward, led Paoli with 27 points. He hit 9 of 15 from the field, including 5 of 10 from three-point range.
Tell City outrebounded Paoli 35-21 overall. But the Rams grabbed six offensive rebounds in the first half and scored three baskets directly off them.
Tell City's only lead of the game came when Ryan Zuelly opened the scoring with a three-point basket.
The Rams built a 31-24 lead on a 17-footer by White midway through the second quarter, giving him 10 points to that point.
The Marksmen cut the gap to two points, 42-40, on a three-point play inside by Eric Henrickson with 3:57 left in the third quarter.
But that was as close as they would get, as they hit only 11 of 34 from the field in the second half.
They had to shoot several three-pointers in the last two minutes, when they trailed by 11 points. But Hayes felt they did not get the ball inside enough earlier against the Rams' 2-3 zone.
"We talked about how we needed to attack the zone and hit the gap and we didn't do it," he said.
Joseph Kohnert led Tell City with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Andy Chinn added 16 points and Henrickson scored 12.
Tell City, 12-4, will host Pike Central Friday at 7 p.m.
