OWENSBORO, Ky.—Tell City placed five runners in the top 30 to win the 30-team Indiana-Kentucky Border Clash boys cross country meet Tuesday.
The Marksmen scored 86 points to edge Meade County, ranked seventh in Kentucky, by two points and become the first Indiana team to win the meet in its four-year history.
Complete boys team scores were not available at press time because meet officials had a problem with their Hytek scoring system.
Freshman Leo Simpson ran the 5-kilometer Yellow Creek Park couse in 17:10 to place seventh among 346 runners, leading the Marksmen.
Thomas Simpson was 10th in 17:18 and Seth Vaquero 19th in 17:54.
Clayton Byrne placed 26th in 18:11 and Reed Goffinet 32nd in 18:18 to complete the Marksmen’s scoring.
Donovan Ingle, 42nd in 18:36, and David Teague, 47th in 18:42, also ran for the Marksmen.
“The course was very slow today with the weather (extremely hot and humid), but we had a very strong performance,” said Tell City Coach Chris Hollinden.
“Donovan Ingle raced for the first time since returning from mono. Once he gets back to his spot near our front, we will be very, very strong.
“Overall, a great night and a cornerstone win that will hopefully set us in motion for the rest of the season.”
Hailey Carman placed 30th in 17:31 in the girls race (shortened to 4 kilometers due to the heat) to lead Tell City to ninth place.
Other Tell City scorers were Katie Goffinet, 33rd in 17:36; Mariah Blake, 85th in 19:06; Jalynn Pruitt, 89th in 19:12; and Addie Terry, 108th in 19:52.
Tell City will compete in the North Harrison invitational Thursday at 5 p.m.
