TELL CITY - Cody Pfeifer pitched a nine-inning four-hitter as Tell City beat Mount Vernon 2-1 in baseball Saturday.
Pfeifer struck out a season-high 11 and walked two. He threw only 120 pitches in the nine innings.
"His fastball was hitting spots and he had a good breaking ball," said Tell City Coach Phil DeSpain. "He pitched a heck of a ballgame."
Pfeifer also had two of the Marksmen's six hits and drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.
With one out in that inning Tommy McCallister doubled off the left-field fence.
He advanced to third base on a wild pitch and scored on Pfeifer's single up the middle.
That was the Marksmen's eighth win in a row and raised their record to 10-5.
But they lost a PAC game to Southridge 5-2 later in the day.
The Marksmen are 1-4 in PAC games and 9-2 in non-conference contests.
Each team had seven hits but Southridge put its hits together better. The Raiders combined three hits with two walks for four runs in the fourth inning.
The Marksmen had three hits in the third inning, when they scored their first run, but no more than one hit in any other inning.
"We just never did put things together that game," said DeSpain. "In between our games we watched Mount Vernon beat Southridge 15-4, so I don't know how that affected our mental approach to our game (vs. Southridge)."
Ryan Zuelly went 2 for 3 with a triple and an RBI to lead Tell City's offense.
Erik Henrickson pitched the first 31?3 innings to take the loss, giving up all five runs. He struck out five and walked four.
The Marksmen will host Crawford County today at 5 p.m.
