TELL CITY—Tell City held off an Evansville Day school rally and beat the Eagles 56-52 in boys basketball Friday.
“We were up by 13 with 3:15 to play in the fourth quarter and on three trips down the floor we took a couple of bad shots and turned the ball over,” said Tell City Coach John Hayes.
The Marksmen committed 10 of their 15 turnovers in the second half.
With less than three minutes left in the game Day School’s Ethan Black made a layup to cut Tell City’s lead to 10, 54-44.
After a Marksman miss, the Eagles’ Basel Allaw made a three-point shot from the right wing. Then Black stole the ball from Tell City and made a layup to make it a five-point game with 2:04 left.
After the Marksmen missed the front end of a one-bonus free-throw situation, Stanley Jackson made a three pointer from the left corner to pull the Eagles within two, 54-52, 1:36 left.
On their next possession the Marksmen held the ball for over a minute before Day school fouled Andy Chinn. He made his first free throw attempt, but missed the bonus shot.
The Eagles used a timeout to try to set up a play with 0:20 left. But they were unable to get an open shot and wound up turning the ball over as Chinn intercepted a pass with 0:09 left.
He was fouled and made 1 of 2 free throws to account for the final four-point margin.
Hayes said, “This is one of those games where you put it out of you mind. You are just happy to win. Defensively, we did a 180 from what we did against North Posey last Saturday.
“We let Black penetrate the middle and we can’t allow the guards from Mater Dei or North Posey to do that Friday night. We will have to defend better.”
Tell City opened the game with a 12-2 run. Chinn made a three-pointer and Corey Young made a basket and free throw before the Eagles scored a basket with 4:58 left.
Jesse Stow had a rebound basket. Then Chinn made two free throws. Stow finished the run with a layup with 3:40 left in the first quarter.
The Marksmen built 15-point lead, 47-32, with 5:50 left in the game.
Chinn scored 22 points to lead the Marksmen and Stow added 10.
Chinn and Stow each grabbed seven rebounds as the Marksmen won the board battle 30-20. Jamal Noland came off the bench to grab six.
Black scored 21 points for the Eagles and Allaw grabbed seven rebounds.
Tell City improved to 8-13 while Day School fell to 6-15.
The Marksmen will play Mater Dei or North Posey in the sectional at Boonville Friday at 5:30 p.m.
