TELL CITY - Tell City held Perry Central to 17.9 percent field-goal shooting and beat the Commodores 56-28 in girls basketball Monday.
Perry Central Coach Sarah Spindler thought her team relied too much on perimeter jump shots.
"When you miss 25 outside shots, you'd think you'd get it inside," she said. "All the shots we took weren't bad shots, but when you don't hit them you've got to try something else.
"I thought we should have gotten the ball in to Alie (Schroeder, Perry Central's center) more early. Then they started double-teaming her and even triple-teaming her, and we had to take some outside shots."
Tell City played a 1-3-1 zone defense, which it had rarely used before.
"We wanted to try it just to look at something different because we'd kind of got stagnant for a while," said Tell City Coach John Lyons.
Whether they were bothered by facing a different defense or were just having a cold shooting night, the Commodores fell behind 14-4 in the first quarter.
They never pulled closer than five points the rest of the way.
Meanwhile the Marksmen started hot from the perimeter. They hit four three-point shots in the first 11:21, including one by Lauren Goffinet from about 8-10 feet beyond the arc at the first-quarter buzzer.
Goffinet led the Marksmen with 18 points. Kara McClintic, who hit two of the three-pointers, added 15 points.
Schroeder led Perry Central with 11 points. No other Commodore scored more than five.
Schroeder grabbed 15 rebounds as the Commodores held their own on the boards. They had 33 rebounds overall, including 11 offensive ones.
Tell City improved to 9-6 while Perry Central fell to 5-12.
The Marksmen will visit South Spencer for a PAC game tonight at 7:30.
Perry Central will host Northeast Dubois, ranked eighth in the state in Class A, Saturday at noon.
