FERDINAND—Tell City out-gained Forest Park 373 total yards to 172 and shut out the Rangers 26-0 in Pocket Athletic Conference football Friday.
On the Marksmen’s second possession, which started at their 21-yard line, they ran the ball 12 times. Elliott Brown gained 52 yards on the drive. He rushed over the left side for a 23-yard touchdown with 0:26 left in the first quarter.
Forest Park had much more trouble moving the ball on its second possession. Quarterback Trent Bayer was sacked by Brown for a 10-yard loss, and on the next play Brennan Malone intercepted a Bayer pass at the Marksmen’s 42-yard line.
Brown and Reese Miller shared the carries on Tell City’s subsequent drive, each getting two on the four-play drive.
Miller picked up 19 yards on his two carries running up the middle. Brown gained 9 yards and then capped the drive by rushing around the right side for a 30-yard touchdown with 8:47 left in the second quarter.
Hunter Sandage kicked his second extra point to put the Marksmen up 14-0.
Tell City Coach Ryan George said, “Reese is a north-south runner. We pounded the ball with Reese.
“Elliott’s running style is more of a water bug. He has good balance when he runs. He is able to hide behind his linemen when he runs.”
After forcing Forest Park to punt, Tell City took over at its 32-yard line with 6:43 left in the first half.
Miller gained 6 yards his first carry. Brown rushed for 8 yards and Forest Park was assessed a 15-yard face mask penalty. Miller rushed for 6 more yards and Brown 3 yards.
Facing a third-and-11 at the Ranger 41, Malone threw a touchdown pass to Chris Schaefer with 4:09 left in the first half.
“Brennan did a good job of getting the ball to Chris,” said George. “We were wanting to hit Spencer (Beard), but he got open late. Throwing the ball to Chris was a little more difficult. Chris made a good catch and run.”
Schaefer also intercepted Bayer in the third quarter, but the Marksmen were unable to put points on the board.
The final Tell City score came on a 74-yard touchdown pass from Malone to Beard. Beard caught the short pass and weaved his way through the secondary for the score.
“It was a slant pattern,” said George. “They came out in the second half and put six guys on the line to stop our run and we knew we needed to throw.
“He (Beard) made a good catch and a good run after the catch.”
Malone threw three passes for the game and completed two of them for 115 yards and two touchdowns.
Brown rushed 24 times for 153 yards to lead the Marksmen’s ground game. Malone added 52 yards on five carries and Miller 49 yards on nine carries.
Forest Park’s Josh Voegerl carried 25 times for 119 yards.
The Marksmen’s defense held the Rangers to 36 yards through the air. Trevor Zuelly also made a sack.
Tell City improved to 4-5 overall and 3-4 in the PAC. Forest Park dropped to 1-8 overall and 0-7 in the conference.
Tell City will travel to North Posey for a first-round sectional game Friday at 7:30 p.m.
