TELL CITY - Steven D. Whitaker, 57, died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2007, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn.
He was born April 30, 1950, in Crawfordsville to the late Robert S. Whitaker and Thelma Morgan Whitaker.
A 1968 graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School in Lafayette, he graduated in 1972 from Indiana State University with a bachelor's degree in marketing and distributive education. He earned a master's degree in education from Indiana University. He married Stephanie Kraus in Tell City July 29, 1978. He taught in the Tell City-Troy Township School Corp. from 1975 to 2005. He taught several classes while serving as assistant football coach, was head football coach for four years, served as head coach for girls basketball and coached girls softball. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 1424, Hoosier Heights Country Club and St. Paul Catholic Church. He enjoyed golf, reading, gardening, bird hunting and playing his guitar. He was a Jimmy Buffett fan and enjoyed trips to Key West to go deep sea fishing.
Surviving are his wife of 29 years, Stephanie Whitaker of Tell City; a daughter, Morgan Whitaker, a student at Indiana University; two sisters, Debbie Moore, North Richland Hills, Texas, and Sue Whitaker of Lafayette and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 26 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Tell City with the Rev. Barnabas Gillespie OSB officiating.
Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday and from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at Huber Funeral Home in Tell City. A parish prayer service will be at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Tell City High School Athletic Fund or the Kidney Cancer Association.
