Stepping Stones awarded grant from Old National Bank Foundation

LEOPOLD – Stepping Stones Preschool recently received a grant for their Families Reading with Redgie Early Childhood Literacy Program from the Old National Bank Foundation.

Families Reading with Redgie is a reading incentive program in place at Stepping Stones, which encourages parents and caregivers to read with children on a daily basis by offering incentives for reading together.

Students enrolled at the school and their families, who live nearly 20 miles from the nearest public library, have unlimited access to the preschool’s extensive lending library and Family Literacy Bags. Family Literacy Bags contain two books – one fiction and one nonfiction – real life activities and creative activities.

Each month all students receive a book along with a literacy extension to add to their home libraries. The bookmobile stops at Stepping Stones Preschool for students and their families to check out books and a community reader visits.

The goals of Families Reading with Redgie are to promote phonological awareness, alphabet recognition and sound-symbol relationships, reading fluency, reading comprehension and family involvement.

Funds from Old National Bank Foundation will be used to help purchase books to distribute to the families enrolled at Stepping Stones Preschool for the Families’ Reading with Redgie Early Childhood Literacy Program. Funds will also be used to purchase Scholastic Classroom Magazines, T-shirts as a reading incentive, and an iPad for classroom use.
