Cannelton, Tell City parades to include jolly old elf

By Vince Luecke

PERRY COUNTY – Santa Claus is coming to town twice this weekend as Cannelton and Tell City host their annual Christmas parades. Cannelton’s parade begins at 7 p.m. Friday. Tell City’s parade starts at 4 p.m. Sunday and will be followed by festivities in City Hall Park.

Cannelton Parade Friday

Harry G. Myers American Legion Post 142 will join the post’s auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion detachment as sponsors of Friday’s parade in Cannelton.

Entries will begin assembling on Old Indiana 237 at 6 p.m. with the parade beginning at 7. The route will proceed along Indiana 66, also Seventh Street, to the traffic light at Washington Street and will then head west on Washington Street to the floodwall.

Entries from Tell City should take Mozart or Tell streets to Old Indiana 237 and travel that roadway into Cannelton. Doing so will eliminate the need to turn around once reaching the city.

Veterans and veteran organizations will be honored as this year’s parade grand marshals. All entries should include the name of the individual, business or organization sponsoring the float so the parade judges can identify winners.

For more information call, Ruth Lawalin at 547-3671 or Mary Stephens after 5 p.m. at 547-8003.

Tell City Parade Sunday

Sponsored by the city of Tell City and the Tell City Beautification Committee, the annual Tell City Christmas parade will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Mayor Barbara Ewing will be the parade marshal.

Entries will assemble in the Tell City High School parking lot on Tell Street. From that starting point, parade entries will travel west on Tell Street to Main Street then south on Main to Washington Street.

Christmas in the Park events will unfold in City Hall Park after the parade. Weather permitting, Santa will greet children under the park gazebo while carolers regale visitors.

There will also be a ceremonial lighting of the city’s Christmas tree.

For more information or to enter, call Brian Melton at 547-3441 or 547-6043 or City Hall at 547-5511.

Leopold Parade Dec. 7

Leopold’s 2008 Christmas Parade will begin at 1 p.m. Dec. 7 with lineup at 12:30 p.m. in the three staging areas. Floats will line up at Perry Central School with tractors and horse units assembling at the Leopold Conservation Club.

Military entries and Perry Central’s Marching Commodores will gather at the James’ Store.

Parade organizers ask visitors to be in Leopold by 12:45  p.m. to limit traffic along the parade route. For safety reasons, no all-terrain vehicles will be allowed as stand-alone entries.

After the parade, Santa will be in the park. For more information on Leopold’s parade, call Guillaume’s Store at 843-5134.
