Would you like to play golf with a world famous actor and a former women's professional golf star?
And would you like to do it less than 50 miles from Tell City?
You can, thanks to Ferdinand's Sisters of St. Benedict.
They will host their sixth annual Gala and Dome Golf Classic Sept. 7-8 in West Baden and French Lick. And they have booked James MacArthur and his wife to speak at the gala and play in the scramble.
MacArthur has appeared in a wide variety of movies and television shows since the 1950s but is best known for his role as Dan Williams on "Hawaii Five-O" from 1968 to 1979.
Nearly every episode of that show ended with his being the recipient of one of the most famous catchphrases in TV history, as after they rounded up the crooks Steve McGarrett would tell Williams, "Book 'Em, Danno."
MacArthur, who was 30 when he started his role on Hawaii Five-O, did most of the actual running after suspects in chase scenes.
He also displayed his running ability in several movies and was a star athlete in high school at Solebury School in New Hope, Pa., where he played guard in football, captained the basketball team, and also played baseball.
He is now 70, though, so maybe you think you could take him in golf. But be forewarned, as recently as 2002 he won the Frank Sinatra Charity Golf Tournament.
Perhaps an even more formidable opponent, though, would be his wife since 1984, H.B. Duntz MacArthur.
She played on the LPGA tour for 12 years in the 1970s and '80s and won the first LPGA teaching membership national championship in 1983.
She met her future husband when she was the golf instructor at a Hawaii Country Club.
As special guests, the MacArthurs will speak at the pre-scramble gala Sunday, Sept. 7.
It will begin with a cocktail reception at 4:30 p.m., Perry County time, and include dinner and music from Louisville's Moonlight Big Band until 9 p.m.
In honor of the special guests, the gala will feature a Hawaiian theme, with Hawaiian wear optional.
The Dome Golf Classic will take place at French Lick's Donald Ross course, designed by Pete Dye, Monday, Sept. 8. Dye has designed many famous course and with Jack Nicklaus co-designed the acclaimed Harbour Town Golf Links, the site of an annual PGA Tour event.
The Ross course is also scheduled to host a PGA tourney in June 2010.
Perry Central's boys team played the PLAC tourney on the Ross course last month and Perry Central Coach Bill Dickerson called it "a gorgeous setting." He also said the greens are long and fast.
The scramble will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m., Perry County time. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m.
Proceeds from the Gala and Dome Golf Classic will support five keystone initiatives of the Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand, including needed repairs to their buildings.
