Smokey Bear to celebrate 70 years of vigilance

-A A +A

TELL CITY – On Aug. 9, the famous Smokey Bear will celebrate his 70th birthday.

Although he may be 70, he has no plans for retirement as his message, “Only You Can Prevent Wildfires,” is as relevant as ever.

To help Smokey celebrate, the Hoosier National Forest staff invite children entering kindergarten through fifth grade to make Smokey Bear a birthday card for chances to win prizes.

Cards may be dropped off or mailed to Hoosier National Forest, Tell City Ranger District, 248 15th Street, Tell City, IN 47586.

Cards are due by Friday, July 18, to be considered for judging. All children who create cards will receive gifts from Smokey. Rules for card-making are:

1. On an 8½ by 11-inch piece of paper, design a card using crayons, markers, watercolors, paints, etc. No computer-generated images will be accepted.

2. Write name, contact information and upcoming grade on the back corner of the card.

3. Prizes will be given to first- , second- and third-place entrants in three divisions: K-first grade; grades 2-3; and grades 4-5.

4. Cards will be judged on originality, design, artwork and overall message.

5. Awards will be presented at a Smokey Bear 70th birthday celebration July 26 at Sunset Park in Tell City. Smokey will be present at the award ceremony.
