TELL CITY - Smitty's Memorial Team pounded out 22 hits to beat Tri-State Service and Maintenance 14-9 Tuesday to win the Tell City Women's Softball League's regular-season title.

Smitty's finished the season 8-0. Tri-State finished second at 6-2 but had a chance to tie Smitty's for the title going into their final game.

Tri-State led 5-2 after four innings on the strength of a five-run second inning.

A triple to deep left-center field by Misty Park, a single by Theresa Lain, three walks and two errors produced those runs.

Smitty's rallied for six runs in the fifth inning to take the lead for good, though.

Seven singles, a walk and a fielder's choice grounder produced those runs. Tammy Litherland drove in two of them with a single to right field.

Smitty's added five more runs in the fifth on five singles, two errors and a sacrifice fly.

Lauren Goffinet, Natalie Cole and Paige Gelarden each had four hits for Smitty's.

Krystal Lawalin added three hits and Litherland drove in three runs.

Cole played despite injuring both knees in a bicycle wreck less than hour before game time. The wounds required stitches after the game.

Goffinet went 7 for 7 plus a walk in her last eight plate appearances to win the league batting title. She edged Kara McClintic of Tri-State Service .750 to .739.

Bridget Bruggeman had two hits to lead Tri-State's nine-hit attack in Tuesday's game.

Smitty's claimed the regular-season title for the 14th consecutive year. The team is sponsored by Consolidated Recycling.

The league's single-elimination playoff tourney started Thursday and will conclude Tuesday with the second semifinal game at 6:30 p.m. and the championship game at 7:30 p.m.
