LINCOLN CITY—Shane Shelton scored three goals as South Spencer beat Tell City 4-1 in the first round of the Heritage Hills Class A boys soccer sectional Monday.

Despite the loss, Tell City Coach Austin Fischer “felt like we played a pretty decent game. We definitely showed improvement since the beginning of the year.

“Their second goal was a fluke—it hit Casey (May, Tell City’s goalie) in the back and bounced off the pole and went in.

“Their third goal went between Casey’s hands and the ground.” The wet field and ball may have made it harder for him to grab it.

Neither team scored in the first 24 minutes. Then Shelton kicked one home with 15:47 left in the first half.

He added one more in the first half and one just over a minute into the second half for his fourth hat trick of the season and a 3-0 Rebel lead.

Tell City senior Matthew Cole came right back with a goal on a direct kick from about 25 yards with 36:52 left.

Tell City got several shots on goal after that, including a couple of fairly open ones, but couldn’t connect.

South Spencer used its superior speed to control the ball most of the time, though.

“They had some quick players,” said Fischer. “Shelton’s definitely fast.”

Vincent Acosta scored an insurance goal for the Rebels with 7:34 left.

Tell City finished the season 1-11-2 with only three seniors on its roster. South Spencer improved to 7-4-5.
