ST. MARKS – A New Jersey man driving a tractor trailer was cited for following too closely after his rig struck a passenger car Wednesday afternoon in Indiana 37. The crash sent the car’s 22-year-old driver to St. Mary’s Medical Center.

According to Perry County Sheriff’s Deputy Roger Smith, Lacey B. McManaway was traveling south on Indiana 37 and was attempting to make a left-hand turn onto Shiloh Road. However, her car was struck by a tractor-trailer that was traveling south behind her and failed to slow.

“For some reason he could not slow down in time and tried to go left but the other driver ended up turning into him,” Smith said.

The force of the impact pushed the car into an embankment with the rig coming to rest against the car.

McManaway was removed from her vehicle by EMS and first responders and flown to St. Mary’s Medical Center.

The driver of the semi, Tejwant Benipal, 56, was cited for following too closely. Bob’s Towing in Hancock County removed the semi from the scene.

Indiana 37 was closed for about two hours as the scene was cleared.
