The Tell City Kiwanis Club and a committee of community members will lead weekend services to mark the 50th anniversary of the Northwest Orient Airlines Electra Flight 710 crash.
In a change made over the weekend, Saturday's memorial service has been moved from the crash site at Millstone to the Cannelton Community Center. The location will better accommodate the crowd and eliminate concerns about weather and a lack of parking along Millstone Road.
The service begins at 2 p.m. and will include remarks by Cannelton Mayor Smokey Graves, Kiwanis representatives Rebecca Fenn and Michael Elaman and Bob Ramsbottom. Cannelton fifth-grader Nicole Harris will recite a poem, "Tears Came Falling Down from Heaven," and student artwork created in remembrance of the crash and its victims will be displayed.
Cannelton American Legion Post 142 will post the colors and perform taps.
Light refreshments will follow the service.
1 p.m. Worship service remembering the victims will be held at the Schergens Center in Tell City. Light refreshments will be available after the service.
Visits to the Electra memorial marker in Greenwood Cemetery will follow this service.
The Cannelton Kiwanis Club led the call to build the memorial at the crash site near Millstone in 1961.
The Perry County Parks and Recreation Department now maintains the site as a permanent memorial to the 63 passengers and crew.
A second memorial, built by the Northwest Airlines Co., stands in Greenwood Cemetery in Tell City over the mass grave of the victims.
Anyone wishing to contribute to the financial costs of providing these services may make a donation to the Tell City Kiwanis Foundation by contacting Michael Elaman at 547-7096.
All donations will be tax-deductible through the foundation.
