ROCKPORT—South Spencer scored seven runs in the first inning en route to a 12-2 baseball victory over Perry Central Saturday.

Perry Central took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on three singles and Clint Schank’s sacrifice fly.

South Spencer took control in the bottom of the inning, though.

Four walks, a double and an error led to six runs for the Rebels and chased Commo-dore starter Tony Backer before he recorded an out.

Andrew Harpenau relieved him and gave up one more run in the inning. He gave up five runs—four earned—in four innings.

Perry Central scored its second run in the second inning on consecutive doubles by Ryan Kessens and T.J. Lamon.

Clint Cassidy went 2 for 3 to lead Perry Central.

Perry Central Coach Gary Hanan said he was “fairly pleased” with Harpenau’s pitching performance and the Commodores’ defense after they settled down.

He noted that Austin Hauser, Lamon and Ian Hahus turned a 6-4-3 double play in the third inning.

Perry Central, 0-1, will visit Corydon today at 4:30 p.m.
