REO—South Spencer outrebounded Cannelton 33-16 to beat the Bulldogs 43-23 in boys basketball Tuesday.
Both teams shot poorly from the perimeter--Cannelton was 4 for 21 from three-point range and South Spencer was 1 for 7.
But the Rebels got more inside baskets thanks to some strong baseline moves and baskets after offensive rebounds.
They had two rebound baskets on one possession with six minutes left in the third quarter.
Stratton Dowland scored on his own rebound and was fouled. He missed the free throw but Mac Webb scored on the rebound to put the Rebels up 32-13.
They led by at least 14 the rest of the way.
“Their offensive rebounding hurt us,” said Cannelton Coach Brian Garrett. “They were aggressive on the glass and we didn’t check out like we always don’t do.”
“We felt like we had a little bit of size on them,” said South Spencer Coach Rob Schulte. “And it’s usually a little bit harder to block out in a zone (defense, which Cannelton played).”
Inside baskets, including those on rebounds and three on layups off steals, helped the Rebels hit 45.7 percent from the field.
Cannelton hit only 25.0 percent and went over five minutes without scoring once in the first half.
“On offense we take too long to shoot,” said Garrett. “By the time we’re ready to shoot, the defense recovers. It’s a learning process.”
Both teams were plagued by turnovers, which hurt their ability to get into any rhythm on offense. They combined for 30 turnovers in the first half and 42 for the game—20 by Cannelton.
Jordan Mattingly led Cannelton with 10 points but hit only 4 of 17 from the field, including 2 of 12 from three-point range.
Three players scored nine points apiece to led the Rebels.
Ethan Patton cam off the bench to lead Cannelton in rebounds with four. Dowland grabbed eight for the Rebels.
Cannelton fell to 0-6 while South Spencer improved to 1-2.
The Bulldogs will host New Harmony Friday at 7:30 p.m.
